WANA (Aug 22) \u2013 International shipping data has cast doubt on claims by Donald Trump\u2019s administration that large numbers of oil tankers are continuing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Axios reporter Barak Ravid, citing three U.S. officials, reported that around 40 oil tankers had entered and exited the Strait through its deep-water southern channel on Friday night. The officials also claimed that around 16 million barrels of oil had passed through the channel that night. CNN separately reported that oil companies in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE were turning off their tankers\u2019 tracking signals and transferring crude through the Strait into the Gulf of Oman, where it was being handed over to customer tankers.<\/p>\n

However, data from maritime analytics firm Kpler presents a significantly different picture. According to Kpler\u2019s figures, only 14 oil tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz over the past week\u2014far below the figure of roughly 40 tankers reportedly cited for a single night.<\/p>\n

An assessment by the UK\u2019s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also points to a sharp decline in commercial shipping through the waterway. According to the assessment, the number of commercial vessels transiting the Strait has fallen from nearly 160 before the war to fewer than 10.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has also rejected statements by Trump and members of his administration suggesting that the Strait of Hormuz is open, underscoring the continued disruption to maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n
