On Saturday, August 22, 175 days into the US-Iran war, US President Donald Trump described the Strait of Hormuz as \u201cAmerican territory\u201d and warned Iran against acquiring a nuclear weapon, as tensions over the strategic waterway remained high.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Trump said Tehran wanted to reach an agreement with Washington but questioned whether the US would accept one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to make a deal so badly, we don\u2019t even know if we want [a deal] because I view the Strait of Hormuz as an American territory right now, it\u2019s an American territory,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

He also warned that Iran would not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot let them have a nuclear weapon; we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon, or you will see some very bad things,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went down, and we stopped them; they will never have a nuclear weapon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Before travelling to Myrtle Beach, Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that the US had \u201ctotal control\u201d of the Strait and the wider region involved in the blockade.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just going to sort of see what happens, and we have total control, as you know, of the border; we have total control \u2014 if you look at the blockade, we have total control of that entire region having to do with the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Shipping remains far below pre-war levels <\/p>\n

Commercial traffic through the Strait remains about 90 per cent below pre-war levels amid security concerns and attacks on vessels in regional waters, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).<\/p>\n

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces had redirected 67 commercial vessels, disabled three and boarded two as of August 20 while enforcing the blockade against Iran.<\/p>\n

The UK Maritime Trade Association, cited by CNN, reported that 103 vessels entered the waterway and 89 departed during the previous week, with traffic up 27 per cent.<\/p>\n

The US Energy Secretary said the US military had helped facilitate the movement of more than 15 million barrels of oil through the Strait on Tuesday, August 18. Including pipeline shipments, nearly 20 million barrels had left the region.<\/p>\n

Trump said oil prices would fall after the US operation against Iran and claimed Tehran had lost significant naval, air and military capabilities.<\/p>\n

Pezeshkian says Iran has won the war <\/p>\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the war with the US should end because, in his view, the world had accepted Iran\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire world approved our victory and the US is hated,\u201d he said, according to Iran\u2019s IRNA news agency.<\/p>\n

His remarks came as the Trump administration stepped up economic pressure on Tehran, with Trump announcing an \u201cunprecedented\u201d campaign of economic warfare and isolation. Washington says the measures are intended to pressure Iran to end its nuclear programme and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to oil and natural gas tankers.<\/p>\n

US envoy\u2019s Golan remarks spark backlash <\/p>\n

Separately, comments by US Ambassador to Turkiye and special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack appeared to conflict with Washington\u2019s position on the Golan Heights.<\/p>\n

In an interview on Friday, August 21, Barrack said Israel \u201cstill\u201d occupies the territory in violation of UN resolutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the Golan, with Syria, they (Israel) still occupy the Golan, against the UN resolutions,\u201d Barrack said.<\/p>\n

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 war and annexed it in 1981. The UN considers the territory occupied Syrian land and regards the annexation as null and void.<\/p>\n

In 2019, Trump recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, reversing longstanding US policy. The decision did not alter the territory\u2019s status under international law or secure broad international recognition. Colombia became the second country to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the territory this month, joining the US.<\/p>\n

Barrack\u2019s remarks drew criticism from conservative activist and US presidential ally Laura Loomer, who posted on X that he \u201cshould resign for his lack of understanding of US foreign policy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nuclear negotiations remain stalled <\/p>\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran had negotiated the June memorandum of understanding with Washington from a position of strength and would defend the rights of the Iranian people in nuclear talks.<\/p>\n

The memorandum was intended to end hostilities and restore shipping through the Strait, but the arrangement later stalled over disagreements about its implementation and navigation through the waterway.<\/p>\n

Iran and Oman have continued discussions on maritime access, but no breakthrough has been reported.<\/p>\n

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) said it had recorded 68 incidents and 19 seafarer deaths in the Strait of Hormuz as of Friday since Iran\u2019s blockade began on February 28.<\/p>\n

The conflict began on February 28 with a US-Israeli attack on Iran, followed by Iranian strikes against targets in Israel and US military bases in the region.<\/p>\n
