Josh Shapiro brought his gubernatorial re-election campaign to Lebanon County Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapiro rallied the vocal Democratic faithful during a campaign stop at the party\u2019s headquarters in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapiro, seeking a second term in Harrisburg during this year\u2019s midterm elections, appeared alongside a handful of local down-ballot Democratic candidates. With him were Rachel Wallace, who is running against Republican incumbent Dan Meuser for the 9th Congressional District seat; Wayne Moyer, who is challenging Republican incumbent Chris Gebhard in the 48th District; and Hugh Darlington, who faces Republican candidate Nicky Woods in the 98th State House District race. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opposite Shapiro on the ballot this fall is Republican and sitting state treasurer Stacy Garrity<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--pointerdown=\"actions.preloadImage\" data-wp-on--pointerenter=\"actions.preloadImageWithDelay\" data-wp-on--pointerleave=\"actions.cancelPreload\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-305554 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_4309.jpg\"  data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tGov. Josh Shapiro rallied Lebanon County Democrats Saturday, criticizing President Donald Trump and Republican rivals over tariffs, health care cuts and alleged corruption while campaigning for re-election alongside local candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 98th seat is open to the two newcomers because incumbent Rep. Tom Jones (R) is running for a seat to represent Lancaster County in the state Senate. The 98th District includes Mount Gretna Borough and South Annville and South Londonderry townships in Lebanon County and sections of northwestern Lancaster County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of concern and there\u2019s a whole lot of anger out there. For as much progress as we\u2019re making here in Pennsylvania, I also know that people are scared and angry and just tired of the chaos and the cruelty and the corruption,\u201d Shapiro said to a packed room at the party\u2019s city headquarters (23 S. 6th St.). \u201cComing from Washington, D.C. Coming from Donald Trump and his enablers like Dan Meuser. And so I\u2019m here to tell you that it\u2019s not just about being angry about that for politics sake. Wallace introduced Shapiro prior to his remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapiro touched on a number of subjects during comments that lasted just under 20 minutes, including tariffs, the Iran war, healthcare and other social services, and women\u2019s reproductive rights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#on-tariffs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"aal_anchor\" id=\"on-tariffs\"><\/a>On tariffs<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst on the chaos, right? How about the chaos of his tariffs going up? Take a look at the news this morning. Canada, it slaps a 50% tariff on our Canadian neighbors. By the way, Pennsylvania\u2019s number one trading partner,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cAnd you know the effect of that is it shuts off markets to our farmers right here in Lebanon. \u2026 It makes your groceries cost a whole lot. And heck, if you\u2019re just trying to buy a present for your kid, it makes that cost more. The tariffs that Donald Trump and Dan Meuser put in place are literally just a tax on the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#on-the-war-in-iran\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"aal_anchor\" id=\"on-the-war-in-iran\"><\/a>On the war in Iran<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat war he entered into wrongly. The war he has no idea how to get out of is making our gas at the pump cost at least four bucks a gallon. Driving up the cost of everything from the ride you got to take to get your kid to their classes on time to the airline tickets you\u2019re trying to buy, everything costs more because fuel prices are high because Donald Trump started a war in Iran that he has no idea how to get out of it,\u201d Shapiro said to frequent loud cheers. \u201cIt\u2019s chaotic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--pointerdown=\"actions.preloadImage\" data-wp-on--pointerenter=\"actions.preloadImageWithDelay\" data-wp-on--pointerleave=\"actions.cancelPreload\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-305514 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_4288.jpg\"  data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tBadges and stickers supporting Rachel Wallace were distributed at Saturday\u2019s campaign rally for a slate of candidates running for state or federal office, including incumbent Gov. Josh Shapiro who seeks re-election.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#on-social-services\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"aal_anchor\" id=\"on-social-services\"><\/a>On social services<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapiro said President Donald Trump made a promise to protect Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and healthcare during his campaign for a second term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is nothing more cruel than going to Washington, D.C., after promising to protect Medicaid and Medicare and Social Security and ripping away healthcare from hard working Pennsylvanians, from disabled Pennsylvanians,\u201d Shapiro said, stating that there are 16,000 people in Lebanon County who are losing or who have lost their healthcare coverage. \u201cDonald Trump and Dan Meuser thought it was a good idea to give a tax cut to the people at the very top and to pay for it on the backs of people\u2019s health care here in Lebanon County, across Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another service program to be cut during Trump\u2019s second term in office is SNAP benefits, according to Shapiro. The Supplemental Nutritious Assistance Program provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford essential foods to benefit their health and well-being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know, it\u2019s even more cruel than ripping away health care telling a parent that they won\u2019t be able to feed their kid at night. Because 140,000 Pennsylvanians, including 8,000 here in this community, will no longer have SNAP benefits, will no longer have food assistance, because Trump and Meuser have decided that they thought a tax cut for the people at the very top was more important,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cThat\u2019s chaos, cruelty, and corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--pointerdown=\"actions.preloadImage\" data-wp-on--pointerenter=\"actions.preloadImageWithDelay\" data-wp-on--pointerleave=\"actions.cancelPreload\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-305515 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_4285.jpg\"  data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tLebanon County residents gather in front of party headquarters in Lebanon about an hour before Gov. Josh Shapiro and others delivered remarks to attendees. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#on-corruption\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"aal_anchor\" id=\"on-corruption\"><\/a>On corruption<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapiro said voters can\u2019t afford to \u201clook the other way on corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s bad enough that Donald Trump and his kids made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/trump-investments-presidency-4ca88728?st=nLR8Dk&amp;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$2.2 billion<\/a> during his time as president. But understand something. It\u2019s not just about the money that they put in their pockets. It\u2019s the money they\u2019ve taken out of yours, which is the price of that corruption, Shapiro said. \u201cWhen he\u2019s sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office, he\u2019s not thinking about how to put money in your pocket\u2026 He\u2019s thinking about how to put money in his own. And so he\u2019s making decisions that work against your interests. I don\u2019t know about you, but I\u2019m done with the chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapiro called Garrity, his opponent, a Trump enabler, saying that she supports tariffs, the bill that cut Medicaid, and the landmark Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe V. Wade.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd she still can\u2019t bring herself to acknowledge that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election here in Pennsylvania. I don\u2019t need an enabler here in Pennsylvania occupying the governor\u2019s office. We got more stuff to get done, and we can\u2019t simply have someone there who\u2019s going to be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump,\u201d said Shapiro. \u201cWe have to stand up to him as I have as your governor. I gave you my word. I would stand up and defend your fundamental freedoms. Warsaw has campaigned for Democratic candidates since 1968, she said, including the past 25 years in Lebanon County.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#on-individuals-rights-ice-detention-facilities\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"aal_anchor\" id=\"on-individuals-rights-ice-detention-facilities\"><\/a>On individuals\u2019 rights, ICE detention facilities<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen Trump demanded that I turn over all of the voter votes with more private personal information, I said, \u2018Hell no,\u2019\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cHe sued me. \u2018I\u2019ll see you in court, Mr. President.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapiro spoke of his opposition to the construction of Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Pennsylvania, and particularly in Schuylkill and Berks counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s why when he and my opponent and Meuser wanted to put two massive ice detention facilities in your district, one in Schuylkill and one in Berks County, I fought them and I won and those detention centers will never come to be,\u201d Shapiro said, which led to loud audience cheering.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#on-farmland-preservation\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"aal_anchor\" id=\"on-farmland-preservation\"><\/a>On farmland preservation<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were at Talview Farm together where we announced that we\u2019d preserved more farmland acreage than any other state in the entire country,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cI came to Lebanon County to work together. I\u2019m gonna be a governor that continues to fight for you to get stuff done for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tGov. (Video by James Mentzer)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#local-reaction\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"aal_anchor\" id=\"local-reaction\"><\/a>Local reaction<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LebTown spoke with several supporters to ask why they attended the rally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roberta Warsaw, a Cornwall Manor resident, said she has campaigned for Democratic candidates every year since 1968, including the last 25 here in Lebanon County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe cares about people,\u201d Warsaw said, adding women\u2019s reproductive rights are a major concern to her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI mean, I have been fighting for those for a long time. But nothing\u2019s more fun than going to a rally and having a megaphone. Josh Shapiro spoke and took photos with supporters at a campaign stop Saturday in Lebanon County. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kathy and Don Martin of Campbelltown also pointed to support of women\u2019s reproductive rights and health care, among other issues, in their reasons for backing Shapiro and Wallace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have a chance to meet Governor Shapiro and I certainly support him and Rachel Wallace as well,\u201d said Cathy. \u201cHe\u2019s done good things for the state of Pennsylvania. We need major changes and she\u2019s (Wallace\u2019s) got a great background and can do the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst off, her experience with the federal government, both in the Senate, with the OMB (Office of Management and Budget) and the White House, with Tim Holden in the past, who I supported in the past, shows her qualifications and her views on the budget,\u201d Don said. \u201cHer economic views are right in line with traditional Republican views, so she\u2019s the right person. Dan Meuser, unfortunately,\u00a0is not.
