{"id":260686,"date":"2026-08-23T00:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T00:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/260686\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T00:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T00:48:10","slug":"syria-says-israeli-strike-near-damascus-violation-of-international-law-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/260686\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria says Israeli strike near Damascus violation of international law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Syria has condemned an Israeli attack on the village of Beit Jinn, southwest of the country&#8217;s capital Damascus, which officials said hit a civilian vehicle and left several people injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The attack was the second known Israeli strike on Syria in the past week, with Syria branding it a &#8220;violation&#8221; of its sovereignty and international law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a post on X, the Israeli military said it had targeted a &#8220;terrorist&#8221; in the &#8220;final stages&#8221; of preparing attacks which posed an immediate threat to soldiers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The latest incident comes days after reports emerged <a data-ylk=\"slk:Israel had struck a military airbase;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c62vy3wl31lo?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Israel had struck a military airbase<\/a> close to the Turkish border, which Syria said threatened to escalate tensions in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After the earlier attack, Washington issued a rare rebuke of Israel, calling it an &#8220;unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In an interview on Friday, the US ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, suggested that the strike could be &#8220;the Israelis baiting the Turks&#8221; in an attempt to draw Turkey into a conflict ahead of upcoming Israeli elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Barrack&#8217;s comments led Israel&#8217;s far-right defence minister, Israel Katz, to describe his account as &#8220;full of inaccuracies&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Writing on X, Katz added Israeli forces were acting &#8220;in light of clear intelligence information about Turkey&#8217;s intentions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Following Tuesday&#8217;s strikes on the Abu al-Duhur airbase, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu published a statement: &#8220;Israel and Syria agreed to a status quo in security matters, which Syria was on the verge of breaching by permitting Turkish troops to deploy at an airbase near Aleppo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"An aerial view of the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase following armed groups opposing the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria capture the airport in southeastern Idlib, Syria on December 04, 2024.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/e38a7303480b336e6edca09d63e04cb3.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Abu al-Duhur military base captured by anti-Assad forces in December 2024 [Anadolu via Getty Images]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After the strike Turkey did not confirm whether any of its troops moved to the Abu al-Duhur airbase, which sits 70km from the Turkish border. However, Ankara rejected Israel&#8217;s suggestion that it posed a threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Abu al-Duhur airbase has been out of service as a dedicated military airfield since 2013.
