US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that the Strait of Hormuz is “US territory”, days after suggesting on 18 August that Washington could soon formally declare the strategic waterway part of the United States.<\/p>\n

Iran has firmly rejected the assertion. Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, accused the US of betraying negotiations, diplomacy and its own commitments.<\/p>\n

Rezaei said Iran would now have to reassess its approach towards Washington. He added that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and would not reopen until the United States “corrects its behaviour” and honours its responsibilities and promises. According to Rezaei, the US must first fulfil its commitments before any further progress can be made.<\/p>\n

Who has authority over Hormuz?<\/p>\n

The northern part of the Strait of Hormuz is bordered by Iran, while the southern part is bordered by the Musandam region of Oman. Ships leaving the Persian Gulf use this route to reach the Arabian Sea and then the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n

For this reason, the Strait of Hormuz is a vital sea route not just for one country, but for many. The United States maintains warships and naval forces there to ensure maritime trade and the security of its allies.<\/p>\n

About 20% of the crude oil and a large amount of natural gas shipped from Gulf countries to the world pass through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Before the US-Iran war began in February, about 2 crore barrels of oil passed through this route every day. Countries like India, China, Japan, and South Korea rely heavily on this route for their energy supplies.<\/p>\n

Rezaei said Trump’s attack could escalate the nuclear arms race.<\/p>\n

Rezaei said Trump’s attack on Iran has further increased global fears about nuclear weapons. He said other countries may now feel they are not safe without nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Rezaei said that Iran is a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has been subject to scrutiny of its nuclear program in accordance with international rules. Despite this, the US attacked it.<\/p>\n

He said this could increase the desire of other countries to acquire nuclear weapons.
