{"id":260874,"date":"2026-08-23T06:31:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T06:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/260874\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T06:31:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T06:31:11","slug":"iranian-cyberattack-shuts-down-british-power-plant-for-four-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/260874\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian cyberattack shuts down British power plant for four days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-905954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Iranian hackers<\/a> affiliated with the regime in Tehran shut down a British power plant for four days in an &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; cyberattack in late July, the Telegraph reported on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the Telegraph, it is believed to be the first successful attack of its kind in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Though British officials have not named the targeted power plant, citing security concerns, the outlet noted that it is &#8220;relatively small&#8221; and, as such, the attack did not affect the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UK&#8217;s<\/a> national power supply or its ability to generate power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have thresholds for important generators to legally notify us of cyber activity, and this site is nowhere near,&#8221; a British government source told the Telegraph. &#8220;It\u2019s a very small-scale site, less than a rounding error compared to grid capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">A British government spokesperson added that the UK has a &#8220;highly resilient energy system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">&#8220;We work closely with the energy sector to protect infrastructure and ensure the highest security standards,&#8221; the spokesperson said. \u201cThis story refers to an incident impacting a small-scale energy generator, and at no point was there a risk to the wider energy system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">US President Donald Trump stated in late July that he did not think Iran was behind the cyberattack<\/p>\n<p>Joe Slowik, director of threat research for Dataminr, told The Washington Post at the time that similar attacks have occurred in water and energy systems across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-905179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">United States<\/a> since the beginning of the war with Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cIt is not a secret that these things have been taking place since the spring,\u201d he said. \u201cThere have been disruptions in multiple critical infrastructure sectors.
