Welcome back to the City AM liveblog.<\/p>\n

The FTSE 100 is poised to edge up on Monday\u2019s market open, with IG futures pointing to a gain of a few points in early trading. <\/p>\n

The blue-chip index ended last week on a high as it finished at 10,816 on Friday, adding 0.6 per cent to Thursday\u2019s close. This put rose-tinted glasses on what had been a thoroughly mixed week of trading up to that point, as investors digested the latest US-Iran tensions and the US Treasury\u2019s attempts to halt a bond sell-off.<\/p>\n

Long-dated borrowing costs in the US had reached their highest level since the global financial crisis, as investors acted on fears that Trump\u2019s administration had lost control of the public finances. This was echoed by sell-offs elsewhere, including in the UK and France.<\/p>\n

Tensions between the US and Iran continued to rise over the weekend, as Iran threatened \u201cearthquake-like retaliation\u201d against Trump\u2019s claims that he would cause an \u201ceconomic D-Day\u201d in Iran as he urges Gulf nations to impose sanctions on the country.<\/p>\n

Dan Coatsworth, AJ Bell\u2019s head of markets, said that the world\u2019s markets \u201clost their foothold after several weeks when it appeared they were successfully climbing the wall of worry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe FTSE 100 did better than most, supported by its plethora of resources stocks. Gold prices pushed through the $4,500 mark as its safe-haven and inflation hedging credentials come to the fore.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext week\u2019s results from Nvidia could put some of the focus back on corporate earnings but, as we head towards the autumn, a chill has started to descend for markets. Investors will be looking for a comfort blanket when Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh addresses the Jackson Hole meeting at the end of this month.\u201d<\/p>\n
