{"id":262039,"date":"2026-08-24T06:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T06:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/262039\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T06:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T06:20:08","slug":"hormuz-tanker-traffic-slumps-as-u-s-and-iran-trade-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/262039\/","title":{"rendered":"Hormuz Tanker Traffic Slumps as U.S. and Iran Trade Threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\">Tanker traffic via the Strait of Hormuz remained weak over the weekend, with fewer than 20 vessels traversing the chokepoint as Iran and the United States traded threats again.<\/p>\n<p>Some 13 tankers passed through the strait on Saturday, with only four making the journey on Sunday, Kpler data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/fewer-than-20-ships-transit-key-strait-hormuz-over-weekend-data-shows-2026-08-24\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cited<\/a> by Reuters showed. That compares to 16 passing through the strait on Friday and one very large crude carrier exiting Hormuz on Thursday, the data also showed.<\/p>\n<p>Over the week to August 21, a total of 103 vessels entered the Strait of Hormuz while 89 exited it, according to data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations. Of that total, 45% were tankers, and of these, oil tankers accounted for 56%, the data showed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraffic remains well below normal levels, with AIS-detected transits approximately 90% below pre-conflict baselines and declining since the June 24 to June 26 peak, the UKMTO said, as quoted by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury Secretary threatened on Sunday \u201can economic D-Day\u201d against Iran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cb865200-1a06-40be-86a3-10ee2bb05804\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saying in an op-ed<\/a> for the Financial Times that \u201cPresident Donald Trump and the overwhelming might of our military have significantly dismantled Iran\u2019s military capabilities and weakened its nuclear programme. Now we are entering the endgame.
