Controversy is growing about the extent to which Iran is smuggling weapons to Hezbollah through Syria, with defense sources, probably connected to Defense Minister Israel Katz<\/a>, leaking that the issue is heating up, while the IDF has said that there is no major change taking place.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> said that a report by Channel 12 based on the anonymous defense sources did not come from them, but advocated that it correctly sized up the increasingly problematic situation.<\/p>\n

Following Ahmad al-Sharaa taking power in Syria in December 2024, he cracked down on smuggling weapons through his territory to Hezbollah, given that he is Sunni and had been fighting Hezbollah for around a decade.<\/p>\n

While al-Sharaa’s relations with Israel have been cold to date, his cracking down on Iranian smuggling to Hezbollah has been a significant fringe benefit for Israel in keeping the Lebanese terror group from rearming.<\/p>\n

This latest leak comes as there is a lively public debate about whether Israel will need to withdraw from part of its buffer zone in Syria and whether the IDF<\/a> will need to carry out fewer military actions in Syria – all of this following a controversial Israeli attack on a Syrian airport in recent days.<\/p>\n

Critics of Netanyahu say that he, and possibly then the defense sources leaking the latest report, are trying to unnecessarily create tension and fear related to Syria and Turkey for electoral purposes.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu, Katz, and some IDF sources have said that the recent attack was necessary to prevent Turkey from encroaching on IDF freedom of military action in Syria.<\/p>\n

Adding in the idea that smuggling from Iran to Hezbollah<\/a> through Syria is a returning and growing problem would support the narrative that Israel must continue to act aggressively in Syria and that the recent attack, which led to a public fight with the US which wants Jerusalem to make more concessions to al-Sharaa as part of efforts to bring him deeper into the Western sphere of influence, was necessary and not political.<\/p>\n

The fact that the IDF and the anonymous defense sources seem to disagree on that issue leaves a hazy picture of how large a problem increased weapons smuggling is.<\/p>\n
