{"id":262280,"date":"2026-08-24T10:01:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T10:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/262280\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T10:01:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T10:01:14","slug":"israel-locates-altalena-ship-after-78-years-at-bottom-of-mediterranean-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/262280\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel locates Altalena ship after 78 years at bottom of Mediterranean Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Altalena ship was located intact on the seafloor 78 years after being sunk following an altercation between the IDF and the Irgun in 1948, National Security Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-election-2026\/article-906394\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Itamar Ben-Gvir<\/a> and the Heritage Ministry announced on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-904543\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heritage Ministry<\/a> said the ship was found at a depth of 503 meters, some 20 kilometers off Israel&#8217;s west coast.<\/p>\n<p>The Altalena arrived in Israel with new immigrants, weapons to fight in the Independence War, and fighters from the Irgun, a paramilitary force that operated before the independence and was absorbed into the IDF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Although it was technically dissolved after the declaration of independence in June 1948, the Irgun kept operating separately from the IDF until September of that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Altalena Affair started after a disagreement between the then Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and the then Irgun leader Menachem Begin, who were fighting over how to divide the weapons inside the ship.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion ended with the IDF shelling the\u00a0Altalena, which destroyed the ship and left it heavily damaged and abandoned.
