Syria incursion day after de-escalation talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Israeli military carried out a new raid in the countryside of southern Syria&#8217;s Daraa Monday, local media reported, a day after Damascus and Tel Aviv held a de-escalation meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Israeli occupation forces advanced with several military vehicles into the village of Maariya in the western Daraa countryside,&#8221; Syrian Alikhbariah TV reported.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Israeli forces raided the town of al-Rafid in Quneitra province and arrested a shepherd, according to the channel.<\/p>\n<p>Areas in southern Syria have witnessed near-daily Israeli incursions and attacks, particularly in Quneitra and Daraa provinces, including raids, searches, arrests and the establishment of military checkpoints.<\/p>\n<p>The latest attacks come despite Syrian and Israeli officials met in Jordan for high-level U.S.-mediated talks in Jordan Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was aimed at easing tensions following \u200brecent Israeli strikes on Syrian territory, Syria&#8217;s state news agency \u200bSANA \u2060reported, citing a diplomatic source at the Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The talks focused on practical mechanisms to halt Israeli strikes, arrests and targeted operations and on reviving negotiations toward a security agreement that could lay the groundwork for a broader future accord, SANA said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The meeting came as part of efforts aimed at reducing escalation following the latest Israeli shelling of Syrian territory and rising tensions in southern Syria,&#8221; one diplomatic source said.<\/p>\n<p>US-mediated talks<\/p>\n<p>The two sides also discussed efforts to ease tensions between Israel and T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n<p>Syria&#8217;s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani told Reuters Saturday that Damascus expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysabah.com\/world\/mid-east\/not-trusting-israel-currently-thankful-for-turkish-support-syria-fm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">security negotiations<\/a> with Israel to resume soon, although he added that there was a lack of trust between them.<\/p>\n<p>Talks had been suspended since the start of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysabah.com\/world\/mid-east\/israel-us-launch-joint-attacks-on-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran war<\/a>, while Syria cut \u2060off \u2060contact entirely after Israeli <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysabah.com\/world\/mid-east\/israel-strikes-ne-syrias-abandoned-abu-al-duhur-air-base\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strikes on Syria\u2019s Abu al-Duhur<\/a> air base last week, according to al-Shaibani.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has for more than a year sought to broker a security agreement between Israel and the government of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Shaibani said the two sides had agreed on paper to &#8220;almost everything\u201d around the beginning of the year, including arrangements for security zones in southern Syria and a buffer zone where only United Nations forces would be present, but Damascus doubted Israel&#8217;s willingness to implement the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli prime minister&#8217;s office did \u2060not reply to a request for comment on al-Shaibani&#8217;s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>                    <a data-fancybox=\"gallery\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/457339.jpg\" data-caption=\"Two boys walk along a road near a building damaged in Israeli attacks in the village of Abdin, Daraa, Syria, June 29, 2026. (AP Photo) <\/p>\n<p>At Sunday\u2019s meeting, SANA said, Syria indicated that its immediate priorities remained an Israeli withdrawal to positions held before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysabah.com\/world\/syrian-crisis\/bashar-assad-regimes-24-year-rule-in-syria-comes-to-end\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bashar Assad&#8217;s overthrow<\/a> on Dec. 8, 2024 and the \u200bfull restoration of a 1974 disengagement agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Damascus also told the Israeli delegation it would not accept \u200barrangements restricting its right to rebuild and develop its armed forces or determine its alliances and partnerships, SANA said.<\/p>\n<p>Syria reiterated that the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights were Syrian territory \u2060but \u200csaid discussions \u200cover the region&#8217;s final status were premature, according to the SANA \u2060report.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has carried out repeated strikes on Syrian \u200cmilitary sites since Assad&#8217;s fall, claiming its actions were necessary to protect its security. Syria has denied posing a threat \u200bto Israel and has demanded an \u2060end to Israeli strikes and incursions.<\/p>\n<p>Syria and Israel have technically \u2060been at war since 1948.
