{"id":263421,"date":"2026-08-25T02:53:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T02:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/263421\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T02:53:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T02:53:11","slug":"dollar-wobbles-as-markets-weigh-iran-sanctions-treasury-buybacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/263421\/","title":{"rendered":"Dollar wobbles as markets weigh Iran sanctions, Treasury buybacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. dollar struggled to hold onto gains against major peers on Tuesday, as investors parsed Washington&#8217;s expanded Iran-related sanctions and renewed efforts to ease pressure on longer-dated Treasury yields.<\/p>\n<p>Matias Baglietto | Nurphoto | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. dollar struggled to hold onto gains against major peers on Tuesday, as investors parsed Washington&#8217;s expanded Iran-related sanctions and renewed efforts to ease pressure on longer-dated Treasury yields.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/EUR=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">euro<\/a>\u00a0was a shade higher at $1.1668, hovering near a three-month peak hit last week, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GBP=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sterling<\/a>\u00a0was 0.1% stronger at $1.3639, near its six-month peak.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\u00a0unveiled\u00a0an expansion of sanctions against Iran on Monday, and warned countries to cut business ties to Iran or risk being forced out of the dollar-based financial system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That potentially is one source of a slight reversal of the dollar weakness that we had at the end of last week,&#8221; Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at National Australia Bank, said in a podcast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The suggestion being that, maybe if you&#8217;re going to be sanctioned and you&#8217;re not going to have access to U.S. dollars, then you better buy some dollars first before that happens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CAD=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian dollar<\/a>\u00a0held flat at $1.3844, steadying after a 0.6% dip in the previous session, as the U.S.\u00a0threatened\u00a0to raise tariffs on Canadian goods after trade negotiations collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/JPY=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese yen<\/a>\u00a0strengthened a tad to 159.21 per dollar, having given back most of its\u00a0intervention gains\u00a0but still well off a multi-decade low of about 164.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DXY\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dollar index<\/a>, which measures the U.S. currency against six major peers, was down marginally at 98.96 in Asia trades.<\/p>\n<p>It climbed 0.16% overnight, lifting it from three-month lows amid a revived\u00a0debasement trade, but appeared to be struggling to sustain the momentum.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NZD=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand dollar<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AUD=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian dollar<\/a>\u00a0were up 0.1% ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia&#8217;s August policy meeting minutes release, last trading at $0.5965 and $0.7157, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In cryptocurrencies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BTC.CM=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bitcoin<\/a>\u00a0was last up 1% at $78,817.34, after registering its largest weekly gain in nearly 3-1\/2 years last week.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Yields ease, but relief limited<\/p>\n<p>Treasuries found\u00a0some support\u00a0after CNBC reported that the U.S. Treasury could use part of its cash balance to buy back longer-dated bonds in an effort to ease borrowing costs.<\/p>\n<p>That comes after Bessent surprised\u00a0global\u00a0bond investors last week by announcing the Treasury would\u00a0double\u00a0the size of its quarterly repurchases of longer-dated bonds after their yields reached the highest levels in nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>However, the relief was limited.
