Welcome back to the City AM FTSE 100 liveblog.<\/p>\n

The blue-chip index jumped on Tuesday morning as investors brushed off the US\u2019 threats of the \u201cgreatest financial offensive ever\u201d against Iran and its trading partners.<\/p>\n

At a press conference last night, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\u2019s threatened an \u201conslaught\u201d of new economic sanctions against Iran and countries which refuse to cut ties with it.<\/p>\n

Despite promising ahead of the announcement to set out his plans to deliver \u201ceconomic D-Day,\u201d Bessent stopped short of enacting any big new penalties on Iran or its trading partners. The Trump administration instead said<\/a> it has expanded the definition of \u201cIran-related conduct\u201d which it could sanction in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe find that the best way to engage with countries is through quiet diplomacy, and we are level-setting with every country to tell them our expectations,\u201d Bessent said, adding: \u201cWe know who they are. They know who they are.\u201d <\/p>\n

Susannah Streeter, Wealth Club\u2019s chief investment strategist, said: \u201cMarkets are in wait-and-see mode, as stricter US sanctions on Iran take hold and investors wait for the latest snapshot of demand for AI infrastructure from tech giant Nvidia. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe FTSE 100 looks set to continue to grind higher, extending its run as heavyweight miners bolster the blue-chip index. The London market is proving remarkably resilient given the cocktail of geopolitical tensions, stubborn inflation concerns and uncertainty over the path of interest rates.\u201d<\/p>\n

The price of Brent crude \u2013 the international benchmark for oil \u2013 fell more than two per cent to just below $92 per barrel on Monday. <\/p>\n

In domestic news, Prime Minister Andy Burnham fuelled speculation<\/a> that he will raise taxes at October\u2019s Budget after he told ITV News that he \u201cwon\u2019t be unrealistic\u201d about the state of the public finances.<\/p>\n
