Significant progress was made in talks aimed at reviving a broken peace deal between the United States and Iran, mediators in Islamabad said on Tuesday, after the South Asian country’s military chief concluded a visit to Tehran.<\/p>\n
“A very positive and productive meeting” was held with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi wrote on X after the visit by General Asim Munir.<\/p>\n
“We remain hopeful that this momentum will help pave the way for further progress and lasting peace in the region,” said Naqvi, who was part of the delegation led by Munir.<\/p>\n
The Pakistani military said the visit was aimed at preventing further escalation, reopening of Strait of Hormuz and a permanent end of the conflict.<\/p>\n
Munir spoke to US President Donald Trump before the visit, and intelligence sources said it comes as both Washington and Tehran expressed willingness for a reengagement.<\/p>\n
Munir also met with Mohsen Rezaee, the newly appointed head of the National Security Council, Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the military’s statement added.<\/p>\n
The US and Iran had concluded a framework agreement to resolve the conflict in mid-June. The agreement was intended to bring about a ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a long-term peace settlement through negotiations within 60 days.<\/p>\n
Both sides accused each other of violating the agreement, and military clashes occurred repeatedly.<\/p>\n
