Washington has launched an economic offensive against Iran and Canada \u2014 the two countries one would normally not lump together. But U.S. President Donald Trump is taking them on at the same time, declaring repeatedly that Tehran is beaten, while asserting that Canada could not survive without the U.S.<\/p>\n
Neither has submitted. Canada is retaliating “dollar for dollar,” Iran is working with Oman to finalize a trade route through the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 meanwhile, China is building a modest hedge against dollar-based sanctions.<\/p>\n
What you need to know today<\/p>\n Just days after the U.S. levied steep tariffs on Canada, Ottawa has announced retaliatory measures<\/a>, matching “dollar for dollar” the\u00a050% duties<\/a>\u00a0that President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0imposed over the weekend after a breakdown in\u00a0trade talks<\/a>.<\/p>\n Ottawa’s new tariffs encompass more than 700 U.S. goods and are worth about $20 billion, mirroring the size of Trump’s latest import taxes on Canadian wine, cement, hockey sticks and more.<\/p>\n Among the most significant are 50% tariffs on American steel and aluminum, doubling the current rate.\u00a0Other goods that are tarriffed include dairy, seafood, appliances, wood and paper products, and clothes.<\/p>\n In China, the U.S. is threatening to cut businesses that help Iran evade sanctions off from the American financial system. And while Beijing can reject the demands, its biggest lenders still have strong incentives to preserve access to U.S. dollars.<\/p>\n But China is building a hedge<\/a>, albeit still a small one, against Washington’s measures. <\/p>\n Peter Alexander, Shanghai-based managing director of advisory Z-Ben, told CNBC that China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, or CIPS, showed it was trying to diversify from dollar-centered finance, without abandoning it altogether.<\/p>\n CIPS transactions have\u00a0picked up<\/a>\u00a0since the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, and generally\u00a0grown this year<\/a>, according to official figures.<\/p>\n Over in the Middle East, Iran looks to be shutting the U.S. out<\/a> from efforts to open the critical Strait of Hormuz, as it negotiates with Oman to establish a temporary joint shipping route and a mission to clear mines from the key oil export corridor.<\/p>\n Oman’s foreign minister said “practical arrangements to restore safe navigation” will be announced soon, and described talks with Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, in Tehran as constructive.<\/p>\n Muscat’s reference to a mine-clearing mission also appeared to contradict President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>‘s statement earlier Tuesday that the U.S. Navy had informed him all\u00a0mines had been removed<\/a>\u00a0from international waters in Hormuz. <\/p>\n Over in markets, all three major U.S. indexes<\/a> rose overnight, with focus on chip stocks ahead of Nvidia<\/a>‘s results. <\/p>\n Shares of the Jensen Huang-helmed company were up 2%, snapping a seven-day decline.\u00a0Advanced Micro Devices<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Micron Technology<\/a>\u00a0added 4.9% and 2.5%, respectively.<\/p>\n Amid a war for talent in AI the exodus at OpenAI continues. The company’s\u00a0head of data centers, Chris Malone, has left<\/a>, adding to the wave of\u00a0recent executive departures<\/a>. <\/p>\n His departure comes after OpenAI’s revenue chief,\u00a0Denise Dresser<\/a>, suddenly announced earlier this month, she would be leaving the company after less than a year in her role. Her exit came just days after\u00a0Brad Lightcap<\/a>, another longtime executive, said he was ending an eight-year run at OpenAI to “start something new.”<\/p>\n And finally…<\/p>\n Apple announces new Mac Mini and Mac Studio models with AI upgrades<\/a><\/p>\n With more consumers turning to\u00a0Apple’s<\/a>\u00a0computers for creating and running AI agents, the company is rolling out new Mac Mini and Mac Studio models with updated chips and other upgrades for artificial intelligence applications.<\/p>\n The Mac Mini can now be configured with two new chips, the M6 and M5 Pro. It’s the first Apple computer with an M6-generation chip, which is manufactured on a 2-nanometer process from\u00a0Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co<\/a>.<\/p>\n Prices are also going up. The computer now starts at $899, up $100 from the prior model. That followed an increase over the summer from $599, which Apple\u00a0blamed<\/a>\u00a0on memory costs.<\/p>\n \u2014 Kif Leswing<\/p>\n
