(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 Journalist Shane Smith says his recent trip to a seemingly bustling Tehran suggests Iran has adapted to a cascade of economic sanctions<\/a> and contradicts Trump administration claims that the country has been crippled.<\/p>\n

“First thing I noticed, actually \u2014 traffic jams, lots of traffic jams, because people were going to work,” the Vice editor-in-chief told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports”<\/a> on Wednesday.\u00a0 “Everything’s open. All the stores are open. All the restaurants are open. Went to the bazaar. It’s packed.”<\/p>\n

He stopped short of saying Iran was “business as usual.” Smith said Iran’s economy has managed to stay afloat because the Revolutionary Guard has pivoted to smuggling.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Iranians selling organs like kidneys to pay for basic necessities, refugees say\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

He likened the armed forces to a “mafia” that brings goods into the country and sells them.<\/p>\n

Smith also said regular Iranians he met in Tehran were downright friendly toward Americans.<\/p>\n

“They’re like, ‘Hey, we love you, but we hate your ‘regime’ and what it’s doing to us,” he said.<\/p>\n

Smith conceded it’s tough to get an honest opinion from Iranians about their government.<\/p>\n

He estimated that the majority of Tehran residents are against the regime, but added, “Now, they can’t do anything because, again, the Revolutionary Guards have the power and the guns.”<\/p>\n
