(WITN) – Six months after President Donald Trump characterized the conflict with Iran as a “little excursion” expected to last only a few weeks, eastern North Carolina residents say the ongoing war is weighing heavily on their minds—and potentially their votes—heading into November’s midterm elections.

The collision of an active foreign conflict with domestic pocketbook issues is shaping up to be a central decider for voters across the region.

“Oh, it’s going to affect my voting all the way, all the way through,” said voter Alan Miller.

When the conflict began in March, administration rhetoric suggested a swift resolution. But six months later, the prolonged engagement has raised broader questions about military planning and foresight.

Dr. Mona Russell, a history professor, noted that predicting the trajectory of any military conflict is rarely straightforward.

“You never know how long a conflict is going to be,” Russell said. “It’s very hard to come up with those exigencies and plans, and the resources that it takes.”

Russell warned that even for Americans not in active combat, the region’s far-reaching economic stability remains highly vulnerable.

“Your average American may not have to be concerned about fighting, but our major trade routes, our commodities, everything is at threat and at risk because of this war,” Russell said.

For many in eastern North Carolina, those risks are already translating into everyday financial strain. Rising commodity prices have become a frequent point of frustration at grocery store checkouts and gas stations.

“I used to be able to fill up for $45. Now it takes between $60 and $70 to fill it up,” said Greenville resident Sue Anderson. “And grocery prices have gone up on everything.”

Beyond the financial impact, other voters feel a deep personal connection to the instability abroad.

“I have friends that are impacted by that war,” Miller said. “I feel for my friends. I feel for people that have family there.”

As candidates ramp up their campaigns for the upcoming midterms, residents say they are looking past standard political talking points, demanding concrete solutions and proof of progress.

“We come from a long history of promises that are just never delivered, and I think at this time people need to see more action,” Miller said. “What is going to get done? What proof have we seen so far from this candidate that will reassure us that this thing is going to get done?”

The debate over the war’s timeline and mounting costs is expected to intensify. President Trump stated this week that he is “not in a rush” to end the conflict, even as the financial cost of the war has officially surpassed $37.5 billion.

Copyright 2026 WITN.
