{"id":269407,"date":"2026-08-29T19:44:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T19:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/269407\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T19:44:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T19:44:07","slug":"michigan-ag-dana-nessel-skips-democratic-convention-over-israel-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/269407\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan AG Dana Nessel skips Democratic convention over Israel fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michigan Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/10\/us-news\/jewish-michigan-ag-says-state-democratic-party-absolutely-not-doing-enough-to-combat-antisemitism\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">skipped her party\u2019s convention<\/a> Saturday after saying she feared being booed, harassed and chased over her support for Israel \u2014 amid warnings of tense clashes over the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t feel safe going,\u201d Nessel, who is Jewish, warned late last month. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like my presence is not going to be welcomed. I don\u2019t want to get chased around. I don\u2019t want to get harassed. I don\u2019t want to get yelled and screamed at.\u00a0I don\u2019t want to get booed off the stage, irrespective of what I\u2019m saying. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Nessel cited a rise in antisemitism on the left and growth of far-right elements in advance of the party gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Her decision came as Michigan Democrats took extraordinary security precautions for the convention following a rowdy April gathering and growing tensions over Israel\u2019s war against Hamas in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>A slate of party leaders signed a letter this week warning delegates against \u201cdisruptive behavior,\u201d while a party email sent Aug. 26 threatened \u201czero tolerance and immediate ejection\u201d for anyone violating its code of conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Among the signers was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/29\/us-news\/el-sayeds-pawpaw-swipe-at-usha-vance-risks-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed<\/a>, who campaigned in part by slamming Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The party also beefed up security, including law enforcement officers, entrance screening and security personnel throughout the venue, the Detroit News reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Democratic ticket stands united on this \u2014 the rules will be enforced, without exception,\u201d party leaders said.<\/p>\n<p>A trio of Democrats including Nessel called for an audit of results from the rowdy April convention, where delegates used a mobile phone app to vote on nominees.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is among those party figures who signed a letter saying \u201cdisruptive behavior\u201d would not be tolerated at Saturday\u2019s convention. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), who was in a tight primary battle with El-Sayed and who was backed by Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY). <\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s convention itself is mostly a formality, as Nessel is barred from seeking another term because of term limits. But the gathering was expected to expose the party\u2019s deep divisions over Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, following Nessel\u2019s announcement, Michigan rabbis and Jewish leaders urged the party to \u201censure the safety\u201d of Jewish delegates. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe you need to make it clear, publicly, that anyone who chases, screams at, or otherwise harasses Jews at your convention will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,\u201d they wrote, the Jerusalem Post reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like my presence is not going to be welcomed. I don\u2019t want to get chased around. I don\u2019t want to get harassed. I don\u2019t want to get yelled and screamed at,\u201d the AG said. Jake May\/The Flint Journal via AP<\/p>\n<p>They added: \u201cIf Jews, including the highest-ranking Jewish state official in Michigan, are intimidated into staying away from your convention, it will not stop there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed, who is Muslim, addressed the issue after winning his primary election: \u201cMy commitment to Jewish safety is the same commitment that I have to the safety of my own daughters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The battleground state, where El-Sayed holds a narrow lead over former Rep.
