Nasdaq futures slipped 0.1%.<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices surged more than 3% after the U.S. strike on Sunday broke a lull in fighting in a war that has lasted <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-war-six-months-israel-mideast-1685cdc4e6ef330406e0ebe242b21e70\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than six months<\/a>. The Trump administration has announced new <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-trump-sanctions-economic-fury-oil-d28206ea288a3d4a9b82260ab44ce460\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economic campaign<\/a> against Iran, but there is a significant risk of escalation in fighting. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Middle East had finally gone quiet enough for oil traders to start sanding some of the war premium out of crude,\u201d wrote Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management. \u201cThen Sunday arrived, with a reminder that quiet in the Strait of Hormuz is not the same as peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude, the international standard, jumped 3.4% to $91.10 per barrel on Monday. U.S. benchmark crude oil was trading 3.6% higher at $86.40 per barrel. <\/p>\n<p>That has created its own form of economic pressures globally, including in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>The national average for gasoline in August has been above $4 per gallon every day in August for the first time ever, according to the AAA. It has been the most expensive August at the pump on record, outpacing even the enormous supply chain crunch during the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2022. <\/p>\n<p>In equities trading, GameStop surged more than 5% before the market opened after the video game retailer provided a preliminary second-quarter earnings outlook above its year-ago results. Shares of Aon fell slightly as the company announced that it was buying insurance broker USI Insurance Services from private equity firm KKR in a deal valued at $17 billion, including debt. <\/p>\n<p>Later this week, the U.S. reports August jobs data. In July, the U.S. job market <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ap.org\/detail\/pronto\/9c2d147c14bc428458be5a1e83e54957\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">stalled unexpectedly<\/a> as employers cut 23,000 jobs. Labor Department revisions slashed another 103,000 jobs from May and June payrolls. <\/p>\n<p>Wall Street is also bracing for a potential rate hike from the U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/federal-reserve-warsh-interest-trump-inflation-ab896df808df3a5a3fa8b943ac5f3867\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Reserve<\/a> following a speech on Friday by Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh about lowering <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/consumer-spending-inflation-tariffs-wages-a7ee35490dc5be41640379b6eafd11a4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a> despite possible short-term pain for the economy. <\/p>\n<p>In the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bond-market-yields-treasury-mortgages-savings-b62bedeb7a8b7d5479e25a560b52176c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bond market<\/a>, the yield on the two-year Treasury, which closely tracks expectations about Fed moves, jumped to 4.35% from 4.22% just before Warsh\u2019s speech at an annual <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-warsh-federal-reserve-d138f675aaa88c91b9dad6fd5823959d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economic symposium held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>That sets up a potential clash with U.S. President Donald Trump, who appointed Warsh and has consistently lobbied for lower rates. <\/p>\n<p>Warsh was adamant again on Friday that he wants to give financial markets fewer clues about what the Fed plans to do with rates for its two jobs of keeping <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/consumer-spending-inflation-tariffs-wages-a7ee35490dc5be41640379b6eafd11a4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a> low and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/economy-jobs-trump-unemployment-rate-jobseekers-9c2d147c14bc428458be5a1e83e54957\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the job market<\/a> strong. But he also said \u201cshort-term interest rates are the predominant tool\u201d for the Fed to do its job. <\/p>\n<p>In Europe, Germany\u2019s DAX lost 0.8% to 26,364.99, while the CAC 40 in Paris edged slightly lower, to 8,399.55. Markets in Britain were closed for a bank holiday. Asian markets were mixed. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. dollar fell to 159.72 Japanese yen from 160.10 yen.
