DUBAI, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Iran will immediately \u2060reciprocate \u2060if the United \u2060States returns to its commitments under an interim \u200bdeal signed in June, President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He made \u200chis comments at the Shanghai \u200cCooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek after the first \u2060exchange of \u2060direct attacks in the U.S.-Iran conflict since late July, \u200bwith the U.S. striking Larak Island and Iran then launching attacks on two U.S. air bases in Jordan.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am stating clearly that \u200bif the U.S. returns to its commitments under the Memorandum \u2060of Understanding, \u2060the Islamic Republic \u2060of \u200bIran will immediately reciprocate,” Pezeshkian was quoted as saying by state media.<\/p>\n
He \u200bwas referring to \u2060an interim deal signed in June between Tehran and Washington in efforts to end the war, which started with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. The \u2060deal quickly unravelled amid disagreements over its implementation.<\/p>\n
Tehran has repeatedly said it \u2060will allow free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies, only if Washington implements the terms of the agreement.<\/p>\n
Pezeshkian said in Bishkek on Monday that war was in no one’s interest and that Tehran was still open to a negotiated solution in its conflict with Washington.<\/p>\n
U.S. President Donald \u2060Trump told Fox News “there will be a response” following the Iranian attacks but told reporters in the Oval Office that the renewed strikes did not signal a return \u200bto full-scale war.<\/p>\n
