Three security incidents involving tankers were reported to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) between 30 and 31 August 2026, including two attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and a separate encounter with a military aircraft in the Indian Ocean, the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) has informed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On 30 August, UKMTO reported that the BURGAN was involved in a security incident while transiting westbound through the Strait of Hormuz before anchoring. US NCAGS confirmed that the vessel had been struck on the starboard aft ballast tank by an unknown projectile. No crew casualties were reported, and a tug was dispatched to assist.<\/p>\n
Also on 30 August, UKMTO reported an attack on the\u00a0SENEGAL PROSPERITY\u00a0while it was transiting southbound through the Strait of Hormuz, approximately four nautical miles from the coast of Oman.<\/p>\n
At 2200 UTC, the vessel\u2019s company security officer reported that the tanker had been struck by three \u201crockets\u201d on the port side, affecting the engine room and a ballast tank. All shipboard communications were lost, and the vessel was reported to be dead in the water and listing to port. It subsequently dropped anchor at 26\u00b019\u2019N 056\u00b033\u2019E.<\/p>\n
Local authorities evacuated the crew, with no casualties reported. The vessel remained not under command.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, a separate incident was reported on 31 August involving a tanker whose name was withheld. The vessel was sailing westbound through the Indian Ocean in international waters, approximately 57 nautical miles from the coast of Oman, when the master reported contact with a military aircraft on VHF Channel 16.<\/p>\n
The aircraft instructed the vessel to reverse course. At 1624 UTC, it overflew the vessel\u2019s bridge in a show of force, with a round landing in the water alongside the tanker. The vessel stopped at 1630 UTC and remained adrift at 22\u00b032\u2019N 060\u00b052\u2019E while awaiting further instructions.<\/p>\n
At 1915 UTC, the master confirmed that all crew were safe and that there had been no further military contact.<\/p>\n
As highlighted by the JMIC, IRGC attacks, attempted attacks and harassment of merchant shipping continued, including UAV overflights, targeted surveillance and occasional VHF hailing. The activity indicates Iran\u2019s continued intent to maintain a presence along key transit routes and exert pressure on vessels passing through the area.<\/p>\n
Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained significantly below normal levels, although volumes edged up modestly from recent lows. Independent tracking data showed traffic in the single digits in both directions, well below baseline levels.<\/p>\n
