The United Nations General Assembly on Monday adopted a Syrian<\/a>-sponsored resolution designating December 19 as the International Day of Recognition for Women Searchers of Missing Persons, marking the first resolution submitted by Damascus to the General Assembly since the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad\u2019s<\/a> government in December 2024. \u00a0<\/p>\n

This resolution aims to highlight women searching for missing family members and recognize the risks and consequences they face in their search, an issue of particular significance in Syria after years of war, detention, enforced disappearances, and displacement.<\/p>\n

The General Assembly called on all member states and other relevant actors to observe the international day through events and activities recognizing the efforts of women who are searching for missing persons and the consequences they have faced.<\/p>\n

Member states and the United Nations<\/a> system are encouraged to take concrete measures to prevent and end all forms of discrimination and violence against women searching for the missing, to protect their rights, and to include them in discussions and decision-making processes concerning their missing loved ones. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Ibrahim Olabi, Syria\u2019s permanent representative to the United Nations, told the General Assembly ahead of the resolution\u2019s adoption that Syrian women had faced what he described as \u201cthe worst missing persons crisis in modern history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olabi said Syria had moved \u201cfrom a dark period in which this pain was denied, and the suffering of its victims was concealed\u201d to a new phase that acknowledges the tragedy, seeks to address it transparently, and mobilizes international support for those affected.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the shift in Damascus\u2019 approach to the missing persons issue, Olabi said the matter had previously reached the General Assembly \u201cdespite the Damascus regime,\u201d whereas today the initiative comes \u201cfrom Damascus itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The resolution is the first initiative of its kind submitted by Syria to the General Assembly since the overthrow of the Assad government. It comes as Syria\u2019s new authorities seek to reshape the state\u2019s approach to missing persons and victims of enforced disappearance, one of the most sensitive issues stemming from decades of repression and the Syrian war.<\/p>\n

Throughout the conflict, mothers, wives, and sisters of missing Syrians played a prominent role in campaigns demanding answers about the fate of detainees and those who disappeared. Many families have continued searching for their relatives both inside and outside Syria.<\/p>\n

Syria\u2019s new authorities face an enormous challenge in determining the fate of the missing, given the multiple parties responsible for disappearances during the years of conflict and the need to collect documentation, preserve evidence, identify human remains, nd connect information with families still searching for their loved ones.<\/p>\n

International recognition to experiences of women<\/p>\n

The new resolution gives international recognition to the experiences of women searching for the missing, including women facing similar struggles in conflicts and crises around the world.<\/p>\n

Olabi thanked the countries that supported the initiative and contributed to its adoption, describing the move as affirming the international community\u2019s commitment to \u201crights, justice and human dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Syria, the resolution carries significance beyond the creation of a new international day. Damascus<\/a> has placed an issue long associated with abuses and enforced disappearances at the heart of the first resolution it has submitted to the General Assembly in the post-Assad era. \u00a0<\/p>\n
