Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) – International Service: The Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced today (Wednesday) that the country has decided to cut diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry claimed that this decision was made based on “Peru’s historic commitment to peace,” respect for international law, and defense of democracy.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lima also made allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, claiming that it is facing “the weakening of democratic values \u200b\u200bin Iran,” and in this regard, he mentioned issues such as protests, freedom of the press, the situation of women and girls, and the treatment of political opponents.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Peru also expressed concern about the disruption in international trade through the Strait of Hormuz since March, claiming that the continuation of this situation could have consequences for energy prices and global supply chains.<\/p>\n

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry went on to accuse Iran of \u201cinciting violence and escalating conflicts in the Middle East,\u201d and also claimed that Tehran is obstructing the activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency.<\/p>\n

Peru\u2019s move comes as the US government has intensified pressure on countries with economic and trade relations with Iran in recent weeks and has warned of imposing secondary sanctions on countries that continue to cooperate with Tehran.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
As part of its maximum pressure policy against Iran, the Trump administration has attempted to expand the scope of restrictions from Iranian companies and institutions to Tehran\u2019s trade and economic partners.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
These pressures have increased as the US, while escalating its military confrontation with Iran, pursues a broad economic campaign to limit the Islamic Republic\u2019s trade and sources of income.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
However, according to the Anadolu Agency, despite the severance of diplomatic relations, Peru announced that consular relations with Iran will continue to be maintained in order to protect the interests and citizens of both countries.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Peruvian government stressed that consular relations between the two countries will continue in accordance with the relevant Vienna Conventions.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry also announced that it had notified Iran of the decision to sever diplomatic relations through an official note.
