{"id":276844,"date":"2026-09-03T15:53:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T15:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/276844\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T15:53:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T15:53:08","slug":"irgc-should-sever-international-fiber-optic-cables-iran-media-demands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/276844\/","title":{"rendered":"IRGC should sever international fiber-optic cables, Iran media demands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Islamic regime has come under increasing pressure from hardline media outlets and figures to escalate the conflict by severing the international fiber-optic cables running beneath the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-907503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and the Arab Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>Hossein Shariatmadari, the managing editor of the ultra-conservative Kayhan newspaper, insisted that disrupting or cutting off the internet cables was a \u201cnecessary measure\u201d to respond to the \u201ccrimes of America and its wicked allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cIs it not our indisputable right, in order to bring these sources of evil to their knees and cut off their lifeline, to prevent internet cables from passing through the depths of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz?\u201d Shariatmadari wrote. \u201cThis necessary measure could be carried out by seriously disrupting the cables\u2019 operation or even cutting them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Though he admitted that such an action would violate international law and add to the list of countries suffering from Iranian actions who were not directly involved in the war, he insisted that their failure to \u201crise up\u201d against the United States made such actions acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-905734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">also reported in mid-August<\/a> that the IRGC had developed plans for \u201cfurther escalation,\u201d including plans to sabotage the cables.<\/p>\n<p>Military historian Dr. Lynette Nusbacher, a former British Army intelligence officer and former devil\u2019s advocate to Britain\u2019s Joint Intelligence Committee, told The Jerusalem Post that the cables are vital to the global economy, especially China\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Nusbacher said that Iran had not needed to \u201cplay that card\u201d because it used the Strait of Hormuz as a pressure point against the global economy. However, American officials have repeatedly claimed that new pipelines in the region would reduce Hormuz\u2019s strategic importance, and the Institute for the Study of War noted that American attacks had left Iran\u2019s ability to control the strait significantly degraded.<\/p>\n<p>An unnamed American source told Saudi-based Al Arabiya on Wednesday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-907267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CENTCOM\u2019s Tuesday night strikes<\/a> were a preemptive response to Iranian attacks on the undersea communications cables.
