{"id":27776,"date":"2026-03-20T07:01:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T07:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/27776\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T07:01:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T07:01:09","slug":"iran-war-puts-listings-on-hold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/27776\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran war puts listings on hold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Stock Exchange (NSE) building in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Dhiraj Singh | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Global volatility is threatening a pipeline of multibillion-dollar stock market listings in India, the world&#8217;s busiest IPO market.<\/p>\n<p>Payments app PhonePe&#8217;s move on Monday to halt its listing plans has underscored a growing strain in the country, as investor appetite weakens amid the fallout from the Middle East conflict. <\/p>\n<p>Indian benchmark indices have dropped more than 12% since January, with most of the decline occurring in recent weeks as the Iran war triggers energy and trade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/13\/indias-modi-reaches-out-to-iran-as-energy-crunch-fears-grip-the-south-asian-nation-.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supply shocks that risk slowing growth<\/a> and hurting corporate earnings. <\/p>\n<p>The rupee&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/INR=\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slide against the dollar<\/a> offers little respite, and foreign institutional investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpi.nsdl.co.in\/web\/Reports\/Yearwise.aspx?RptType=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">have sold over $8 billion<\/a> worth of equities so far this month, per data from securities depository NSDL.<\/p>\n<p>This risk\u2011off environment has drained liquidity from the primary market and reduced the chances of IPOs securing the premium valuations that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/24\/india-ipo-boom-multinational-companies-list-local-business-units-mnc-korea-nifty-50-sensex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made going public attractive<\/a>, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>Several Indian tech and consumer startups \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/WMT\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walmart<\/a>-backed PhonePe, quick-commerce app Zepto, e-commerce retailer Flipkart and hotel chain Oyo \u2014 have deferred plans amid valuation mismatches, according to Samir Bahl, CEO of investment banking at Anand Rathi Advisors. <\/p>\n<p>In December, Zepto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/29\/zepto-confidential-ipo-filing-india-quick-commerce-instamart-swiggy-blinkit-zomato-eternal-flipkart-amazon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confidentially filed for an IPO<\/a> and planned to raise over $1.2 billion of fresh capital. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/SFBQF\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Softbank<\/a>-backed hospitality startup Oyo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/softbank-backed-oyo-hotels-parent-makes-confidential-ipo-filing-sources-say-2025-12-31\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">did<\/a> the same in December, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/108278738-17737298701773729867-44625363929-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"India IPO activity has slowed since the war began in the Middle East: Jefferies\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Oyo and Walmart-owned Flipkart did not respond to emails seeking comment. <\/p>\n<p>In response to CNBC query on its IPO plans, Zepto said it &#8220;remains consistent with its previous advisory, subject to market regulations.&#8221; As the company has filed for IPO confidentially, it was not clear what the earlier advisory was, but a spokesperson from the company said it plans to launch an IPO around June.<\/p>\n<p>During a phone call with CNBC, a spokesperson from PhonePe reiterated the stance of the company from its note on Monday, which said that the quick commerce company had temporarily paused its IPO listing due to &#8220;the current geopolitical conflicts and market volatility.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Large\u2011ticket planned IPOs, including those by the NSE, telecoms firm Reliance Jio and SBI Mutual Fund, are expected to proceed &#8220;once conditions improve,&#8221; said Bahl, adding that &#8220;timing and pricing will require careful calibration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s largest telecom company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/29\/indias-richest-man-mukesh-ambani-to-list-jio-in-biggest-ever-ipo.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reliance Jio, is planning its IPO<\/a> for the first half of 2026 and is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/ambanis-reliance-jio-hires-banks-ipo-will-raise-no-new-funds-sources-say-2026-03-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">process of appointing bankers<\/a>, according to a Reuters report. The National Stock Exchange, India&#8217;s largest bourse, <a href=\"https:\/\/nsearchives.nseindia.com\/web\/pressrelease\/2026-03\/PR_cc_12032026_20260312155134.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">appointed 20 merchant bankers<\/a>, it said in a release on March 12.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indian IPOs and other fundraising activity has been a function of the market level,&#8221; Mahesh Nandurkar, head of research and India strategist at Jefferies, told CNBC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/inside-india\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Inside India<\/a> on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>IPO activity has slowed since the start of the war in Iran on Feb. 28 as investors have lost their appetite, he added. <\/p>\n<p>Global brokerages have also trimmed their expectations: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NMR\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nomura<\/a> cut its year\u2011end Nifty 50 target by 15% from 29,300 in a March 16 note to investors, while on the same date, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/C\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Citi<\/a> lowered its forecast to 27,000 from 28,500, factoring in the impact of surging oil prices and supply shocks stemming from Middle East tensions.<\/p>\n<p>The liquidity needed to absorb the mega IPOs is missing, said Shouvik Purkayastha,\u00a0managing director of investment banking at Nuvama, adding that it is unlikely to return in the &#8220;near-term,&#8221; in a written response to CNBC.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Retail investors retreat<\/p>\n<p>For the past two years, India&#8217;s primary market has been buzzing with activity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/en_gl\/insights\/ipo\/trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">topping global charts<\/a> with 367 IPOs in 2025, according to EY&#8217;s Global IPO Trends 2025 report. <\/p>\n<p>But recent poor returns have kept retail and high\u2011net\u2011worth investors on the sidelines, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>Eight out of the 11 IPOs that have listed since the start of the year are trading below their IPO price, according to exchange data. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Retail and HNI investors are shying away from the market,&#8221; said Purkayastha, adding that these investors will come back only once returns see sharp improvement.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773647107_147_inside_india_widget_logo_2026.png\" width=\"195\" height=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tGet a weekly roundup of news from India in your inbox every Thursday.<br \/>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/newsletter\/inside-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Subscribe now<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Few companies are proceeding with their IPOs due to &#8220;immediate funding requirement[s]&#8221; for business needs or due to the need to meet regulatory timelines, said Bahl of Anand Rathi Advisors, adding that investor participation has &#8220;been relatively muted, particularly from retail investors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even foreign institutional investors, who were exiting from the secondary market last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpi.nsdl.co.in\/web\/Reports\/Archive.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">invested<\/a> nearly $1.5 billion in IPOs from January to March of 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpi.nsdl.co.in\/web\/Reports\/Archive.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">versus<\/a> just $820 million this year, per data from NSDL.<\/p>\n<p>This has put domestic institutional investors \u2014 buoyed by 60 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amfiindia.com\/uploads\/AMFI_Monthly_Note_Feb2026_07ce65814b.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">straight<\/a> months of positive equity flows from Indian investors \u2014 firmly in control of pricing, according to Purkayastha.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic institutional investors are currently setting the price of IPOs by &#8220;driving a hard bargain,&#8221; he said, adding that they want IPOs to be valued &#8220;competitively.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Choose CNBC as your preferred source on Google and never miss a moment from the most trusted name in business news.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The National Stock Exchange (NSE) building in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025.
