This, says Sonia Sarkar, is because of Hindu supremacist Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s\u00a0proximity to Israel&#8217;s leader Benjamin Netanyahu\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Military aggression is escalating in the Middle East. Israeli and US\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c5yj9kr31y7o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">air strikes<\/a> have killed Iran\u2019s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. To de-escalate tensions, India urged all parties to exercise restraint. Modi advocated the pursuit of &#8216;dialogue and diplomacy&#8217; and\u00a0advised all states to\u00a0prioritise &#8216;sovereignty and territorial integrity&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/6\/is-brics-bloc-divided-over-us-israel-attacks-on-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only<\/a> founding BRICS member that has not formally condemned the attacks on Iran. It co-sponsored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/india-cosponsors-unsc-resolution-condemning-egregious-attacks-by-iran-against-gcc-nations-jordan\/article70733687.ece\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UN resolution<\/a> that condemned \u2018egregious attacks\u2019 by\u00a0Iran against Gulf Cooperation Council countries, instead.<\/p>\n<p>Balancing Israel and Iran\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, the US-Israel air strikes began soon after Modi had concluded a whistlestop visit to Israel. Enjoying great bonhomie with Israeli\u00a0Prime\u00a0Minister Netanyahu, Modi signed a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mea.gov.in\/bilateral-documents.htm?dtl\/40828\/India__Israel_Joint_Statement_February_26_2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raft of\u00a0MoUs<\/a>, in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, defence and agriculture. At the Knesset, Modi pledged that\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneycontrol.com\/news\/india\/israel-us-strikes-on-iran-why-timing-of-pm-modi-s-jerusalem-visit-has-sparked-a-chatter-13846658.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">India stands<\/a>\u202f&#8217;firmly, with full conviction&#8217; alongside Israel. For his &#8216;loyalty&#8217;, Modi was awarded a Speaker of the Knesset Medal, an honour which, allegedly,\u202fhad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/netanyahu-accused-inventing-knesset-award-india-modi?utm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">never existed<\/a>\u202fearlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Modi became the first Indian prime minister to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/newsreel.asia\/articles\/epstein-files-india-israel-us-opposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">visit Israel<\/a>, during a trip allegedly scheduled on\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/epstein\/files\/DataSet%2010\/EFTA01618764.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>&#8216;s advice. That year, India was the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/2\/2\/modi-to-kevin-rudd-how-epstein-files-set-off-a-storm-far-beyond-the-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">largest buyer<\/a>\u202fof Israeli weapons, purchasing $715m worth, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/1\/29\/india-bought-israeli-pegasus-spyware-as-part-of-weapon-deal-nyt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Pegasus spyware<\/a>\u202ffor\u00a0monitoring\u00a0the devices of opposition politicians, journalists, lawyers, and civil rights activists. More than 80% of what\u202fIndia buys\u202ffrom\u202fIsrael\u202fis advanced technology designed for\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/india-is-israels-largest-arms-buyer-their-defence-partnership-in-numbers-11134512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">surveillance<\/a>, protection, and\u00a0accurate\u00a0military strikes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While it focused on growing proximity with Israel, India distanced itself from Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iran, however,\u00a0remains\u00a0an important strategic partner for India. Indeed, Iran was one of the first countries to establish <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/diplomatic-relations-with-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">diplomatic relations with India<\/a>\u202fafter it became a republic; the two have over 75 years of diplomatic history. Iran serves India\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.ijris.com\/index.php\/ijris\/article\/view\/219\/263\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">multifaceted strategic interests<\/a>: engagement\u202fwith West Asia, security dynamics\u202fand\u202fstability in the Persian Gulf, land access to Central Asia and Russia, energy security, and the geopolitics of Afghanistan. And India and Iran share\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/india-andiran-tied-in-tandem\/article70706585.ece#:~:text=Exclusive%20Economic%20Zones%20of%20India,for%20its%20North%2DSouth%20Corridor.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">civilisational history<\/a>. Between 1950 and 2003, the two signed a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianembassytehran.gov.in\/eoithr_pages\/MTY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">friendship treaty<\/a>, the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.pib.gov.in\/archive\/releases98\/lyr2001\/rapr2001\/11042001\/r1104200112.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tehran Declaration<\/a>\u202fand the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mea.gov.in\/other.htm?dtl\/20182\/The+Republic+of+India+and+th#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">New Delhi Declaration<\/a>\u202ffor deepening India-Iran co-operation.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iran was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with India after it became a republic; the two have over 75 years of diplomatic history<\/p>\n<p>Modi did not visit the Islamic Republic until 2016. The only significant arrangement with the country was a\u202ften-year agreement to develop Chabahar Port in southeastern Iran, an important entrep\u00f4t leading to Afghanistan and Central Asia. By 2025,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/india\/fulfilled-120-mn-commitment-for-chabahar-mea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">India had invested $120m\u202fin its development<\/a>. Reports\u00a0indicate\u00a0that recent US-Israel strikes specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naval-technology.com\/news\/india-ports-us-navy-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">targeted<\/a> Chabahar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India buckles under US pressure\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iran once supplied\u00a0nearly 10%\u00a0of India\u2019s crude oil requirements. India, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/abs\/new-gulf-security-architecture\/indias-relations-with-iran-looking-beyond-oil\/2ABCCDF7D91D0BE46F6EDF053CAB42C2?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reversed<\/a>\u202fthis by voting against Tehran\u2019s nuclear programme at the International Atomic Energy Agency. New Delhi eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/commodities\/irans-crude-oil-output-up-20-in-2-years-at-3-3-of-global-supply-what-does-this-mean-for-the-proxy-war-with-israel-11713273713779.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">halted oil imports<\/a>\u202ffrom Iran after May 2019, when the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action collapsed and the US reinstated sanctions on Iranian oil exports. US President Donald Trump recently suggested that\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeastmonitor.com\/20260201-india-to-buy-oil-from-venezuela-not-iran-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">India will buy oil from Venezuela<\/a>\u202finstead of Iran, and it allowed India\u202fa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/business\/Economy\/us-issues-30-day-waiver-to-allow-india-to-purchase-russian-oil-amid-west-asian-supply-woes\/article70709950.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">30 day-window<\/a> in March to\u00a0purchase\u00a0oil from Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beginning with his visit to the UAE in August 2015, Modi launched a focused\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2024\/03\/modis-success-story-in-west-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">outreach to West Asia<\/a>. His visits boosted political and economic ties with the\u00a0region,\u00a0but Modi made little attempt to build the kind of solid, strategic partnership India enjoys with Israel. India\u2013Iran bilateral trade has\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/khamenei-killing-five-geopolitical-factors-behind-indias-silence\/article70699499.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">declined sharply<\/a>, from about $17 billion in 2018 to\u00a0roughly $1.68 billion\u00a0in 2024\u201325.\u202fIndian investments in Iran\u2019s oil and gas sector, too, have\u00a0largely stalled.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Copying the Israeli\u00a0model\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s ruling\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/theloop.ecpr.eu\/tag\/bharatiya-janata-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bharatiya Janata Party<\/a> (BJP) and\u00a0its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theloop.ecpr.eu\/tag\/hindutva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hindu nationalist supporters<\/a> are increasingly engaging with Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israel is a close defence partner and source of critical military technology to India. For Hindu nationalist Modi and his BJP, the country has also become a <a href=\"https:\/\/unicri.org\/index.php\/News-Right-Left-Wing-Violent-Extremist-Digital-Technologies-SouthAmerica-Africa-Asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">model state<\/a>\u202ffor strong ethno-nationalist governance and effective counterterrorism.<\/p>\n<p>For Modi and his BJP, Israel has become a model for strong ethno-nationalist governance and effective counterterrorism<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ecpr.eu\/Events\/Event\/PaperDetails\/47201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">is fragmented, polarised and divided<\/a> by ethnicity,\u00a0religion\u00a0and ideology. India, too, is highly <a href=\"https:\/\/v-dem.net\/weekly_graph\/india-s-polarized-society-and-the-role-of-rel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">polarised<\/a>. Since Modi&#8217;s election, India has been drawing on elements of Israeli security and nationalism models. Critics say this has reinforced majoritarian politics at home. The BJP \u2013 flagbearers of Hindu majoritarian <a href=\"https:\/\/theloop.ecpr.eu\/tag\/hindutva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hindutva<\/a> ideology \u2013 has adopted an aggressively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.populismstudies.org\/professor-jaffrelot-india-under-modi-shares-similar-patterns-with-israel-in-their-ethnic-democracies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">populist<\/a> posture. Supporters repeat anti-Muslim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/20\/world\/asia\/india-muslims-citizenship.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rhetoric<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/01\/world\/asia\/india-modi-hindus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">diminish<\/a>\u202fthe rights of non-Hindus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israel has\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/12\/15\/israel-to-demolish-25-homes-in-occupied-west-bank-nur-shams-camp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">demolished<\/a>\u202fthousands of Palestinian homes, hospitals, and places of worship in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, displacing tens of thousands of residents. Similarly, in India, authorities have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-61042315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">demolished<\/a> houses and religious sites belonging to Muslims, whom authorities often portray as &#8216;foreigners&#8217; or the &#8216;other&#8217;. Hindu nationalists\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-hamas-war\/article-783035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">celebrated<\/a>\u202fIsrael\u2019s attack on Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardngr.com\/2026\/03\/khamenei-jubilation-as-israel-celebrates-iran-leaders-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Israelis<\/a>, Hindu nationalists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thequint.com\/news\/politics\/jihadis-in-india-beating-their-chest-hate-against-muslims-mourning-khamenei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rejoiced<\/a>\u202fat the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, much as Indian Shia Muslims mourned it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What should India do?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India\u00a0should now move beyond\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/opinion\/2024-03-12\/ty-article-opinion\/.premium\/why-israels-new-nationalistic-judaism-doesnt-care-about-the-hostages-in-gaza\/0000018e-32d0-d5ad-addf-7ed15b390000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Israeli-style\u00a0nationalism<\/a>. Indeed, it has taken cautious steps to engage with Iran.\u00a0On 28 February, India granted safe harbour to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/opinion\/iran-israel-war-and-the-limits-of-indias-strategic-autonomy-11188871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Iranian naval ship IRIS Lavan<\/a>\u00a0at Kochi. Its crew has stayed at naval facilities since 4 March. Following the recent air attacks, India\u2019s foreign secretary signed the condolence book at the Iranian Embassy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, India must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/16\/india-us-israel-relationship-iran-war-testing-ties.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">secure<\/a> a long-term safe passage for its ships carrying liquefied petroleum gas transiting the Strait of Hormuz. This will help deal with rising energy costs at home.<\/p>\n<p>India and Iran share a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-36341636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">deep cultural connection<\/a>. New Delhi could explore a similar arrangement with Iran. <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/energy\/oil-gas\/india-likely-to-extend-lng-import-deal-with-qatar-for-20-years-at-lower-rates\/articleshow\/107445186.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Qatar<\/a>\u202fremains India\u2019s largest natural gas supplier; it also sources substantial volumes from Abu Dhabi. If Iran resumes gas exports, reviving negotiations on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcs.org\/comm_select.php?articleNo=503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Iran-Oman-India pipeline<\/a>\u202fmight significantly strengthen India\u2019s long-term energy security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orfonline.org\/research\/the-role-of-iran-in-india-s-strategic-outreach-in-west-asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Naval cooperation with Iran<\/a>\u202fwould also protect vital lanes in the Arabian Sea, securing the safe passage of Indian vessels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/23\/guess-who-india-pakistan-and-iran-are-all-wooing-the-taliban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Iran expanded engagement with the Taliban<\/a>. India, too, now counts the Taliban as\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/theloop.ecpr.eu\/india-has-a-new-friend-the-taliban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">friends<\/a>.
