\nARABSALIM: Lebanese president Joseph Aoun urged Washington and the international community to help stop Israeli attacks after strikes on Sunday killed at least four people despite a truce and an Israel-Lebanon deal.<\/p>\n
In the latest escalation, Israel said it targeted Hezbollah operatives and sites in response to a drone attack a day earlier by the Iran-backed group on its troops in a strategic south Lebanon ridge area.<\/p>\n
Israel reported no troop casualties but accused Hezbollah of a \u201cblatant violation\u201d.<\/p>\n
Israel this week said it had captured the Nabatieh-area Ali al-Taher ridge, which it considers part of its self-declared \u201csecurity zone\u201d in south Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Hezbollah, which has not claimed any attacks for weeks, has not commented on Israel\u2019s declaration of control over the site.<\/p>\n
Aoun said Sunday\u2019s strikes, which damaged government premises and destroyed an out-of-service hospital, were \u201ca dangerous escalation\u2026 reaching Lebanese state institutions\u201d and health facilities.<\/p>\n
He called on the international community and in particular the US, which has sponsored direct Israel-Lebanon talks and a framework agreement between the sides in June, \u201cto urgently act to stop these violations\u201d.<\/p>\n
Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said two people were killed in strikes on south Lebanon\u2019s Nabatieh al-Fawqa, with two women also killed in nearby Arab Salim.<\/p>\n
It said 20 other people including several women and three children were wounded there as well as in the city of Nabatieh and town of Kfar Rumman.<\/p>\n
Hospital hit<\/p>\n
The ministry said one of the strikes in Nabatieh al-Fawqa \u201ctotally destroyed\u201d the out-of-service Ghandour hospital, decrying \u201canother grave violation of international humanitarian law\u201d.<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s army said it targeted Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure, including \u201cweapons storage facilities and terrorist structures\u201d as well as \u201ca Hezbollah command centre that had been established inside a building previously used as a hospital\u201d.<\/p>\n
It had earlier issued its first evacuation notice in Lebanon in a month, warning residents near a building it identified as a Hezbollah \u201cfacility\u201d in Arab Salim to leave ahead of an attack on the site.<\/p>\n
It did not issue warnings for other areas where strikes were reported.<\/p>\n
Lebanon\u2019s state-run National News Agency (NNA) said that after the Israeli warning for Arab Salim, \u201cenemy warplanes launched a strike on another house, destroying it\u201d and killing the two women.<\/p>\n
It said the Israeli military subsequently carried out a strike on the building threatened in the evacuation warning.<\/p>\n
An AFP correspondent saw a devastated structure that used to be a villa, including a large decorative column that had been toppled, at the site of the Israeli warning.<\/p>\n
Haidar Haidar, brother of the building\u2019s owner, told AFP that nobody had been living inside.<\/p>\n
At the second site in Arab Salim, where the two women were killed, a mattress, furniture and other items including a Hezbollah flag were strewn among the rubble, while neighbouring buildings were also damaged.<\/p>\n
\u2018Take action\u2019<\/p>\n
The NNA also reported a strike on a motorcycle in the Nabatieh area and said an airstrike on Nabatieh city targeted a historical building and damaged offices belonging to finance and agriculture authorities.<\/p>\n
An AFP correspondent there saw rubble and extensive damage to adjacent buildings, shops and vehicles, as heavy machinery cleared the road, while dust and debris covered chairs and desks in the regional ministry offices.<\/p>\n
Nabatieh Mayor Abbas Fakhreddine said \u201cthe Lebanese government must take action\u2026 and at the least defend its institutions\u201d, adding that it was the second time the official buildings had been damaged by strikes.<\/p>\n
Lebanon was drawn into the wider Middle East war in March after Hezbollah attacked Israel in support of its backer Iran.<\/p>\n
Israel responded with airstrikes and a ground invasion of Lebanon that Beirut says have killed more than 4,300 people.<\/p>\n
Violence has decreased since a US-Iran memorandum of understanding on the broader regional conflict in June and the Israel-Lebanon framework agreement later that month.<\/p>\n
