Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei claimed the missile had been tested against a US warship, though it was unclear whether the weapon tested was the Qassem Basir. <\/p>\n
The US said Iran launched ballistic missiles at US warships on Saturday and that it struck three Iranian oil tankers in response. The US Navy said its warships evaded the attacks. <\/p>\n
Iranian media described the Qassem Basir as a major advance, citing its improved range and accuracy and a half-ton warhead. The missile was unveiled last year with a reported range of at least 1,200 km. <\/p>\n
The White House rejected Rezaei\u2019s plan for an \u201cexclusion zone\u201d near the Strait of Hormuz, saying the waterway remains open and under US control. The US said its Navy had cleared mines from the strait and that tanker traffic to non-Iranian ports would increase. <\/p>\n
Washington\u2019s blockade of Iranian ports remains in place, with the US military saying 94 commercial vessels had been redirected and three disabled. Iran wants ships to use a route designated by Tehran through the strait, while global shipping traffic has fallen sharply. <\/p>\n
