{"id":283273,"date":"2026-09-08T09:30:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T09:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/283273\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T09:30:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T09:30:09","slug":"irans-ex-president-calls-for-public-say-on-ending-iran-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/283273\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran&#8217;s ex-president calls for public say on ending Iran war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Hassan Rouhani called for the Iranian regime to allow the public to decide whether to end the war if a ceasefire agreement met Iranian demands, according to footage of the speech shared by the former Iranian president.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-789665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rouhani<\/a>, who reportedly made the comments over the weekend at a gathering of former provincial governors, criticized the small minority \u201cwho now hold the megaphones and are making noise,\u201d in an apparent reference to hardliners who have opposed concessions aimed at ending the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cIt is very important that the framework of our national goals is clear to ourselves first, and then we present it to the people,\u201d he said. \u201cWe say to the people: our plan is to fight the world\u2019s big powers for another 20 years. If the people say they accept it, very good, let\u2019s continue. But if the people do not accept it and show us another way, do we not want to accept that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Rouhani called for the war to end \u201chonorably\u201d and in accordance with \u201cthe overwhelming majority of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cWe must, in accordance with the overwhelming majority of the people, end the war with honor so that we can rebuild the country, so that we can compensate for the damage done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Iranian class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The former president also criticized Iran\u2019s state broadcasters, claiming that the media stations had become a \u201ccenter for division.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Backlash over Rouhani\u2019s remarks<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Though Rouhani\u2019s remarks left open the possibility that the Iranian public could choose to continue the war, his comments were met with criticism from hardliners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Hossein Shariatmadari, the editor-in-chief of the Kayhan newspaper, called on Iran\u2019s judicial and security authorities to investigate Rouhani, accusing him of advocating surrender to the United States and Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cThe real meaning of Mr. Rouhani\u2019s position is abandoning the defense and surrendering the country to the United States and Israel,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency also accused Rouhani of fueling polarization after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-906986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei<\/a> reportedly called for national unity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cMr. Rouhani\u2019s recent remarks are a clear example of \u2018pouring water into the enemy\u2019s mill\u2019 and an obvious assist to those hostile to the system and the Iranian people,\u201d the agency published, accusing him of failing to respect the dignity of the Iranian people.<\/p>\n<p>Some Iranian media sites have also reported on public calls for Rouhani to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-905669\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">executed<\/a> during pro-regime rallies, though The Jerusalem Post was unable to locate footage of said demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Notably, Rouhani\u2019s comments came only weeks after former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami, who served from 1997 to 2005, voiced his support for the expired Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed by Washington and Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cSince World War II, no document signed by a US president has given this many advantages to the other side and imposed this many commitments on itself,\u201d Khatami said. \u201cIf we lose the opportunity created by the memorandum, we will face extraordinary problems\u2026This memorandum has no
