US President Donald Trump has again suggested renaming the strategically important Strait of Hormuz<\/a> as the \u201cTrump Strait\u201d, saying Iran\u2019s leadership would be \u201cthrilled\u201d by the move. He also vowed that Washington would not allow Tehran to acquire a nuclear weapon amid the ongoing US-Iran war.<\/p>\n

Addressing the Republican Party\u2019s midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, Trump said the US was \u201cwinning\u201d the war with Iran and connected the conflict with oil prices<\/a> and the strategic waterway through which a significant share of global energy supplies passes.

\u201cI think we should call the Strait of Hormuz the \u2018Trump Strait<\/a>\u2019… I\u2019m sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that,\u201d Trump said, adding that he expected oil prices to fall once the US \u201cwin[s] the war with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be called, ladies and gentlemen, I\u2019ll have an announcement. We\u2019ll call it the Trump Strait, and I\u2019m sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trump also said the US could have taken a different approach if Iran had a nuclear weapon.
\u201cIf they (Iran) had a nuclear weapon, I’d be calling the Supreme Leader, and I’d be saying, \u2018Mr. Supreme Leader, how are you, sir? Is there anything we can do for you?\u2019 as opposed to bombing the crap out of him,\u201d Trump said.\u201cIt\u2019s very simple. We cannot let them have a nuclear weapon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Trump also spoke about Iran\u2019s suspected nuclear-related site at Pickaxe Mountain<\/a>, saying the US could potentially target the location if activity there resumed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s another place called Pickaxe Mountain, another nice place. We may have to give him a shot there too because somebody said there was a little movement at the site,\u201d Trump told the crowd.<\/p>\n

CNN had meanwhile reported increased construction activity at the site, which is buried under granite and has long attracted the attention of intelligence agencies as a possible location for Iran to safeguard elements of its future nuclear programme.<\/p>\n

The broadcaster said satellite imagery analysis by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies had identified a \u201cclear surge in construction activity\u201d at the site this year, based on an examination of six years of satellite imagery.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t need much. We can see everything,\u201d Trump said, referring to American capabilities.<\/p>\n

Trump also highlighted US energy production<\/a>, claiming that the country is producing more oil and gas than Russia and Saudi Arabia combined.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur country is producing more gas and oil than Russia and Saudi Arabia combined today. We\u2019re now the biggest (oil producer) in the world,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the US administration\u2019s recently announced deal involving Venezuela, calling it \u201cthe biggest oil deal in the history of our country\u201d and claiming access to 65 billion barrels.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the biggest oil deal in the history of our country. 65 billion barrels are ours,\u201d Trump said, adding that the reserves could represent \u201c500 years\u201d of supply.<\/p>\n

The remarks come amid heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, and the wider US-Iran conflict.<\/p>\n
