(ABC News: Heidi Pett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The convoy was being escorted by Kurdish security forces, who remain in control of a small section of north-eastern Syria \u2014 including where the Al-Roj camp is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A message was passed to the Australian families by the Kurdish escorts, saying Syrian authorities would not allow them to continue their journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, the federal government said it would not help the families return to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Australian government is not and will not repatriate people from Syria,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our security agencies have been monitoring \u2014 and continue to monitor \u2014 the situation in Syria to ensure they are prepared for any Australians seeking to return to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People in this cohort need to know that if they have committed a crime and if they return to Australia, they will be met with the full force of the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The safety of Australians and the protection of Australia&#8217;s national interests remain the overriding priority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian government did not confirm whether it had issued passports to the group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Take your citizens&#8217;: Camp urges Australia to repatriate families<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dozens of Australian women and children were detained in Syrian camps and prisons after the so-called Islamic State &#8220;caliphate&#8221; was defeated by US-led forces in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The women were the partners \u2014 or were believed to be by authorities \u2014 of jailed or killed members of the terrorist group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-20\/australian-women-who-lived-under-islamic-state-come-home-syria\/104953800\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;You don&#8217;t know my story&#8217;: Australian women who lived under ISIS beg to come home<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australian women who lived in the Islamic State terror group&#8217;s so-called caliphate speak from detention camps in Syria for the first time, begging the federal government to bring them home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The first group of Australians, consisting of four women and 13 children, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-10-28\/australian-women-children-detention-camp-return-sydney\/101587288\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101587288\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were released from the Al-Roj detention camp back in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As of last year, more than 30 Australians in the camp still<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-20\/australian-women-who-lived-under-islamic-state-come-home-syria\/104953800\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104953800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> wanted to return home<\/a>, one of the women told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The camp&#8217;s director, Hakmiyeh Ibrahim, told the ABC earlier this month that she had urged foreign governments to try to bring their citizens home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My message is not only to Australia but to all countries: take your citizens, take these children and women,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman wearing a head scarf talking.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3b80b2c1be188fa9c7fe99709f2c54f4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Hakmiyeh Ibrahim has urged all foreign governments to repatriate their citizens held in the camps.
