Relations worsened between the two countries after several drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities in 2019, though Tehran denied any responsibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr. Najah Al-Otaibi, a Saudi researcher and analyst specializing in international relations and the Gulf region, told the Post that the recent escalation has \u201ceffectively ended the 2023 Beijing-mediated normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Saudi foreign ministry stated that continued Iranian attacks would lead to further escalation and have &#8220;significant consequences&#8221; for current and future relations, which followed a Wednesday statement by the Saudi foreign minister warning the kingdom reserved the right to act militarily against Iran \u200cand any trust with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/defense-news\/article-890804\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tehran;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Tehran&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Tehran<\/a> had been shattered following recent attacks.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Smoke rises above Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, March 5, 2026. A statement released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:China\u2019s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;China\u2019s&quot;}\" class=\"link \">China\u2019s<\/a> foreign ministry, which at the time condemned Israel\u2019s \u201cinfringement on Iran&#8217;s national sovereignty and territorial integrity,\u201d said the three nations had been looking forward to \u201cexpanding cooperation in economic, political and other fields, and emphasized the importance of dialogue among regional countries aimed at consolidating security, stability, peace, and economic prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is a frustrating setback for those who believed diplomacy could finally resolve these long-standing differences,\u201d Al-Otaibi shared. \u201cIn response, Saudi Arabia and its GCC (Gulf Cooperative Council) partners appear to be unifying their military strategies\u2014a positive step toward strengthening their collective self-defense and stability, given the current tensions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr. Arash Azizi, an academic and author of the book What Iranians Want, added, \u201cMeasures taken by Qatar and Saudi Arabia against Iran are far from symbolic &#8211; they show serious resolve and a protest at Iran\u2019s escalations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Azizi warned, \u201cIran risks ruining years of its attempt to curry favor with Riyadh and Doha. As GCC countries plan for their long-term security, they will now view Iran much more alarmingly.
