{"id":35126,"date":"2026-03-25T08:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T08:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/35126\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T08:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T08:32:09","slug":"south-korea-braces-for-worst-case-scenarios-as-iran-oil-shock-deepens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/35126\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea braces for &#8216;worst-case scenarios&#8217; as Iran oil shock deepens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Riders refuel their motorbikes at a gas station in Hongdae district in Seoul, South Korea, on Saturday, July 2, 2022. <\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>South Korea stepped up its emergency economic planning on Wednesday as Prime Minister Kim Min-seok warned the government must prepare for &#8220;worst-case scenarios&#8221; from a Middle East conflict that has shown no sign of abating.<\/p>\n<p>The government planned to set up an emergency economic task force, led by Kim, to coordinate cross-ministerial efforts, the prime minister said at a press briefing, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20260325002251315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yonhap News Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is time to step up the government&#8217;s preemptive response system to prepare against a prolonged situation, including worst-case scenarios,&#8221; Kim said. <\/p>\n<p>The group will convene twice a week across five working groups, overseeing the war-induced impact on energy, the macroeconomy, financial markets and household livelihoods, as well as overseas situation monitoring. <\/p>\n<p>Separately, an emergency economic situation room will also be set up at the presidential office, Kim added.  <\/p>\n<p>The moves follow South Korean President Lee Jae Myung&#8217;s instruction on Tuesday to activate a preemptive emergency response system, as Seoul stepped up efforts to manage the economic fallout from the conflict.  <\/p>\n<p>The Asian country imports around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/south-korea-considers-importing-russian-oil-naphtha-industry-ministry-says-2026-03-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">70% of its crude oil<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/south-korea-fm-cho-requests-iran-ensure-safety-vessels-inside-strait-hormuz-2026-03-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">20% of liquefied natural gas<\/a> from the Middle East, leaving the economy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/09\/south-korea-fuel-price-cap-oil-price-surging.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">particularly vulnerable<\/a> to prolonged disruptions in energy flows.  <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/02\/strait-of-hormuz-crisis-us-iran-israel-war-shipping-trade-oil.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and carrying one-fifth of global energy flows, has been effectively closed by Iran since the war began on Feb. 28. The disruption has rattled global energy markets, reigniting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/24\/euro-zone-pmi-staglation-risks-critical-energy-crunch-vdl-iran-war.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflationary pressures<\/a> stemming from surging energy prices.  <\/p>\n<p>South Korea has rolled out several emergency measures as the Iran turmoil deepened, including imposing a fuel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/south-korea-impose-fuel-price-cap-shield-economy-energy-shock-president-says-2026-03-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">price cap for the first time in nearly three<\/a> decades to contain a spike in energy prices. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/108282595-17744072021774407200-44794311128-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"BoK faces 'hawkish pressures' if Iran shock feeds into South Korea's core inflation: JPM\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The price caps could lower retail fuel prices by roughly 8% on an annual average basis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GS\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> estimated in a note on Tuesday.  <\/p>\n<p>The government has also imposed a five-day, license plate-based rotation system to restrict public-sector vehicle traffic and reduce oil consumption, and urged households to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/south-koreas-lee-calls-energy-saving-campaign-including-curbs-cars-2026-03-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">take shorter showers<\/a> and charge phones during the day.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Utilities inflation, mainly electricity and gas, is likely to gradually rise from 4Q26E [the fourth quarter of 2026] as the major gas and power companies would act as a price buffer for a while,&#8221; Jin-Wook Kim, Chief Korea Economist at Citi, said in a note Tuesday.
