But Iranian state media reports it’s been rejected. All the while, others, including Egypt and Türkiye, are seemingly passing notes between the two sides — particularly regarding shielding the Gulf states from further attacks. The prospect of some sort of a deal hasn’t stopped the attacks on Iran by the US and Israel, or Iranian retaliatory strikes. And the United States is reportedly considering sending thousands of troops to the region, in another sign that this could drag on and worsen. US Marines are already en route.Hezbollah’s chief has vowed the group will continue fighting against Israel, in the face of a now public plan to occupy a large swathe of southern Lebanon. On Tuesday, local time, Israel’s defence minister announced Israeli forces would occupy the area from the current Israel-Lebanon border to the Litani River — often considered the boundary of Hezbollah’s heartland in the south. Naim Qassem argued the group had no choice — it would either surrender, or fight. The Lebanese Army has confirmed its assessment of a missile which was intercepted and rained debris over an area north of Beirut was that it came from Iran — or at the very least, was manufactured by Iran. It was the first time an Iranian missile was intercepted in Lebanese airspace during the war, with speculation that it may have been fired towards the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean. The president of Cyprus says talks are underway with the UK about the future of British bases on the island, given recent Iranian drone attacks. Here’s what all that means

The past few days have proven how anything Donald Trump says needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Or a teaspoon. Perhaps a ladle.

The US president has been speaking in very positive terms about the prospect of an end to the war. Two days ago, he backed down on his threat to attack Iranian power plants if the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps didn’t open up access to the Strait of Hormuz.

He said talks were progressing, suggesting a deal could be imminent. And Iran mocked him for it.

There may well have been some indirect overtures from Iran on those issues that prompted Mr Trump to make such comments. But the suggestion that peace was on the horizon was always going to be a stretch, given the deep hostilities still present.

The Trump administration and the Iranian regime both have their own unique ways of expressing themselves — both are prone to hyperbole.

But the White House is also attuned to fluctuation in global markets.

It regularly touts rallying markets as evidence of its economic mastery. Markets crashing, and commodities surging, undermines that message. And anything the president can say to ease the frayed nerves of traders will always help.

We saw markets recover, somewhat, when the president spoke of the prospects of peace.

But as much as the US might be looking for an off-ramp here, and Iran may be suffering immense losses, neither will want to yield much ground in negotiations.

All of that comes before you take into account Israel in any equation. It has already taken a dim view of any talks, and the US itself has admitted Israel has different priorities in this conflict.

And here’s the impact on AustraliaMany Australians are feeling uncertain and even anxious as they feel the impacts of the war at home. But there is calming news: These kinds of global crises follow a predictable pattern. We are not in uncharted territory. Read more about how we have handled these shocks in the past.

Thanks for joining me.
