&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Here are the latest developments in the Middle East war:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Pope hopes Trump will end war \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV said he hoped US President Donald Trump was looking to end the war in the Middle East and called for a halt to the violence. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m told that President Trump recently stated that he would like to end the war, hopefully he\u2019s looking for an off-ramp, hopefully he\u2019s looking for a way to decrease the amount of violence, of bombing,\u201d the pope told journalists.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Strikes in Beirut \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Lebanon said Israeli strikes hit near Beirut\u2019s main airport road.<\/p>\n<p>One strike hit a building after Israel\u2019s military warned it would strike a \u201cHezbollah facility\u201d there.<\/p>\n<p>The road is the main means of accessing the country\u2019s only international passenger facility.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanon meanwhile denounced what it called Israel\u2019s plans for \u201ca new occupation of Lebanese territory\u201d after Israel said it would establish a \u201csecurity zone\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Netanyahu vows to \u2018crush\u2019 Iran \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would press ahead with its military campaign against Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe campaign is not over,\u201d he said in a televised statement. \u201cWe will continue to crush the terror regime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Iran has \u2018will\u2019 to end war \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Iran has the \u201cnecessary will\u201d to end the war with the targets in Lebanon as an \u201cillegal invasion\u201d that violates its \u201cintegrity and sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Save fuel, EU says \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The EU urged member states to try to push down domestic demand for fuel in the face of surging energy prices caused by the Middle East war.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Israel blamed for killing peacekeepers \u2013<\/p>\n<p>A UN security source told AFP that Israeli fire had killed an Indonesian peacekeeper at the weekend, after the UN force said it was investigating the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The source told AFP on condition of anonymity that evidence had been identified that the source of the fire on Sunday was an Israeli tank.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Infantino on Iran \u2013<\/p>\n<p>FIFA president Gianni Infantino told AFP that Iran \u201cwill be at the World Cup\u201d and will play their group matches in the United States as scheduled, despite the Middle East war.<\/p>\n<p>The war has thrown in doubt Iran\u2019s participation at the World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Italy refusal \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Italy recently denied authorisation for some US aircraft headed to the Middle East on a combat mission to land at its Sigonella base, a defence ministry source and Italian media said.<\/p>\n<p>Under the terms of agreements with the United States, some Italian bases can be used by US military aircraft, but only for logistical purposes, which was denied in this case on the grounds that there was not enough time to get parliament\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Deadly Iraq strike \u2013<\/p>\n<p>A strike in western Iraq killed three fighters from the former paramilitary coalition Hashed al-Shaabi, the alliance said in a statement, blaming the US and Israel for the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance, also known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), is now part of Iraq\u2019s regular armed forces although it also contains pro-Iran
