Jen Kiggans, a Virginia Republican and Navy veteran, came away from the briefing convinced that Iran posed an &#8216;imminent threat.&#8217; But she does not learn what that threat was. <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jen Kiggans, a Republican from Virginia, was among the lawmakers briefed on Tuesday by Trump administration officials on the U.S. war with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy veteran came away convinced that Iran posed an \u2018imminent threat.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But she told WTOP\u2019s Nick Iannelli she does not know specifically what that threat was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m assuming we had some type of knowledge that solidified it enough for us to take action,\u201d Kiggans said Wednesday. \u201cThe world is a safer place because of our actions in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kiggans said CIA Director John Ratcliffe offered to brief members on the more specific intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to requesting a briefing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In the Senate on Wednesday, where views of the U.S. strikes on Iran are largely split along party lines, Republicans voted down <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/government\/2026\/03\/congress-taking-first-votes-on-iran-war-as-debate-rages-about-us-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">an effort to pass a war powers resolution<\/a> to halt the war.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told WTOP on Monday that there was no imminent threat to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, Iran\u2019s been at its weakest point in decades,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Van Hollen called it \u201can illegal war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a regime change war which Donald Trump said he would never start. And here we are. Americans have already lost their lives, civilians have lost their lives, and for what? And the President can\u2019t answer that question,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump and his advisers have said that the military campaign could last four to five weeks, and Monday, Trump said he was prepared \u201cto go far longer than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kiggans, who represents parts of southeast Virginia, expressed confidence that Trump\u2019s war will not turn into another open-ended conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have clear objectives that we are trying to meet. I think our allied partners are more read in now than ever, because they have not only attacked American military outposts, but they are also attacking our allied partners in that region. So of course, they will be engaged,\u201d Kiggans said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to make the case that this does any good, given all the risks involved,\u201d Van Hollen said. \u201cThis is clearly going to roil the region. It\u2019s going to create even more instability in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rep.
