We will not be drawn into the conflict,\u201d Starmer said bluntly, ruling out any immediate military role for Britain even as tensions threaten global energy supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the UK is rallying allies around a talk-first strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke during a press conference at Downing Street in London on Wednesday. via REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Starmer announced a virtual summit to unite efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, bringing together 35 countries for an effort focused on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/30\/us-news\/trump-tells-the-post-his-response-to-iranian-regime-coming-shortly-after-tehran-attacks-israels-biggest-oil-refinery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diplomatic and political measures<\/a>\u201d to reopen the strait \u2014 with meetings planned in the coming days to explore options.<\/p>\n<p>Only after the fighting stops, he said, would military planners even begin discussing how to ensure ship security through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will assess all viable diplomatic and political measures\u2026 and then convene our military planners,\u201d Starmer said \u2014 adding a warning: \u201cThis will not be easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It comes after Trump raged against both Britain and France for their snubs of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/31\/world-news\/pilots-shot-down-by-friendly-fire-during-iran-missions-already-back-to-dropping-bombs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US efforts in the war<\/a> over a series of Truth Social posts Tuesday night, blasting London for failing to get involved in the decapitation of Iran and Paris for refusing to let planes en route to Israel with military supplies \u201cfly over French territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of those countries that can\u2019t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz \u2026 I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won\u2019t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren\u2019t there for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Few ships have been able to safely transit the Strait of Hormuz since the war with Iran began one month ago. Go get your own oil!\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, he told Reuters in an interview that he was \u201cabsolutely without question\u201d considering withdrawing the US from NATO<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/01\/us-news\/trump-absolutely-considering-nato-exit-will-rip-europe-in-primetime-remarks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> over his frustration with the alliance.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Congress in 2023 passed a law requiring the president to receive approval from a two-third Senate super-majority to do so.<\/p>\n<p>France, meanwhile, has also been hosting talks with counterparts interesting in \u201crestoring of freedom of navigation in the Strait,\u201d bringing together defense chiefs from 35 countries for a teleconference on March 26, according to a statement from the French Ministry of the Armed Forces and Veterans.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump on Wednesday threatened that he would consider withdrawing the US from the NATO alliance. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initiative, decoupled from ongoing military operations in the region, is strictly defensive in nature,\u201d the ministry said. \u201cIts purpose is to organize the resumption of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz after the cessation of hostilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said the reopening can only happen \u201conce the intensity of hostilities has sufficiently decreased\u201d \u2014 but Paris has so far refused to publicly define the conditions necessary for such actions to begin.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear if a cease-fire would be enough for participating countries to begin pitching in.<\/p>\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz is a vital oil chokepoint for many countries reliant on the Middle East for their energy security. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Trump on Wednesday said <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/27\/us-news\/trump-considers-renaming-strait-of-hormuz-after-either-america-or-himself-once-he-evicts-iran\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tehran had asked the US for a cease-fire,<\/a> but said that would not be acceptable until the strait is reopened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran\u2019s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear.
