The Muslim-majority nations denounce Israel\u2019s \u2018increasingly discriminatory\u2019 practices that \u2018entrench a system of apartheid\u2019.<\/p>\n

Eight \u2060Muslim-majority countries have issued a joint statement that \u201cstrongly \u2060condemned\u201d Israel\u2019s one-sided bill to impose the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of fatal attacks.<\/p>\n

Pakistan, Turkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, \u2060Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, \u2060and the United Arab Emirates condemned \u201cincreasingly discriminatory, escalating Israeli practices that entrench a system of apartheid\u201d, according to the joint statement released by Islamabad on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s parliament, the Knesset, passed the controversial bill on Monday<\/a>, a one-sided law that will not impose the same penalty on Jewish Israelis convicted of killings.<\/p>\n

Its passage marks a major victory for Israel\u2019s far right, with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir having pushed for its enactment as one of the main conditions of his Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party\u2019s coalition agreement with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

The eight countries also expressed \u201cdeep concern\u201d over the conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention, warning of mounting risks amid reports of \u201congoing abuses, including torture, inhumane and degrading treatment, starvation, and the denial of basic rights\u201d.<\/p>\n

The statement read that these practices reflect a \u201cbroader pattern of violations against the Palestinian people\u201d.<\/p>\n

The countries also cautioned against measures by Israel that risk further inflaming tensions on the ground.<\/p>\n

The law<\/a> has also been criticised by the United Nations and the European Union; however, Israel\u2019s ally, the United States, came out in support of its \u201csovereign right to determine its own laws\u201d.<\/p>\n

Israel has applied the death penalty twice since its founding.<\/p>\n

It has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and violence there by Israeli forces and settlers against Palestinians has soared since Israel\u2019s genocidal war on Gaza began in 2023.<\/p>\n
