Robert Satloff recently observed<\/a> that \u201cthe Lebanon story increasingly resembles the distorted narrative that characterized Israel\u2019s Gaza operation in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack\u201d and provided three examples of ways in which that narrative is manipulated, including \u201c[w]hitewashing the provocateur\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lebanon story, like Gaza\u2019s, is a tale of legitimate Israeli retaliation for unprovoked attack. But just as Hamas eventually disappeared from many reports of the Gaza fighting, which often depicted a vengeful Israel purposefully killing innocent civilians, so too is Hezbollah disappearing from the Lebanon narrative.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n

CAMERA UK has documented numerous examples of BBC reporting on events in the Gaza Strip<\/a> in which Hamas \u201cdisappeared\u201d.<\/p>\n

A BBC REPORT ONCE AGAIN FAILS TO TELL THE WHOLE STORY<\/a><\/p>\n

Even before the current war began, we also documented examples of the same airbrushing of Hizballah and other terrorist organisations in BBC reporting from Lebanon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

OMISSIONS IN BBC REPORTING ON STRIKES AGAINST HAMAS AND HIZBALLAH<\/a><\/p>\n

BBC FRAMING OF LEBANON CEASEFIRE ANNIVERSARY FAILS TO ADEQUATELY INFORM<\/a><\/p>\n

An additional example appears in an article published on the BBC News website on the afternoon of April 1st. Headlined \u201cIsrael intensifies Lebanon attacks and hits areas not in Hezbollah\u2019s control<\/a>\u201d and credited to Lina Sinjab<\/a>, that report opens with vague accounts of strikes reportedly carried out by Israel the previous day.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael has intensified its attacks on Lebanon this week, hitting areas outside of Hezbollah\u2019s control on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Strikes without warning hit a vehicle north of Beirut and the Jnah neighbourhood in the heart of the capital.<\/p>\n

Attacks also continued in the city\u2019s southern suburbs and the country\u2019s south, both where Hezbollah has a strong presence.<\/p>\n

A building was destroyed on the road to Beirut\u2019s airport after an evacuation order, and in the south, a strike hit a health facility, killing a paramedic, according to Lebanon\u2019s health ministry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sinjab fails to clarify that, like its Hamas equivalent, Lebanon\u2019s health ministry<\/a> \u2013 which is headed by a Hizballah minister<\/a> \u2013 does not distinguish<\/a> between civilian and combatant casualties. Her only mention of the targets of those strikes comes in a quoted IDF statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael\u2019s military said it had hit Hezbollah infrastructure in Beirut and killed a senior commander and another senior figure from the Iran-backed armed group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sinjab goes on to tell BBC audiences that:<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Tuesday, a vehicle was targeted in the Mansourieh area, a predominantly Christian residential neighbourhood north of Beirut.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Jnah neighbourhood in the heart of the capital was attacked after midnight. The Lebanese health ministry said the Al-Zahraa Hospital had received and treated \u201ca number of those injured in the air strike\u201d. [\u2026]<\/p>\n

The Dahieh neighbourhood to the south of Beirut, where Hezbollah has a strong presence, continues to be a target. A building was destroyed on Tuesday in Ghobeiry on the road to the airport following an evacuation order.<\/p>\n

Also on Tuesday, Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said at least seven people had been killed by Israeli strikes in the country\u2019s south, including the paramedic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sinjab\u2019s focus on the what, when and where of the story she purports to report fails to provide BBC audiences with essential information concerning the why: the reasons behind those strikes in Lebanon.<\/p>\n

The target<\/a> of the pre-warned<\/a> strike described by Sinjab as having taken place \u201con Tuesday in Ghobeiry on the road to the airport\u201d was the commander<\/a> of Hizballah\u2019s southern front<\/a>, Hajj Youssef Ismail Hashem<\/a> who had previously operated<\/a> on behalf of Hizballah in Syria<\/a> and Iraq<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe commander of Hezbollah\u2019s Southern Front, responsible for the terror group\u2019s military activity in south Lebanon, was killed in an Israeli Navy strike in Beirut last night, the IDF announces.<\/p>\n

The strike in the Lebanese capital killed Hajj Yusuf Ismail Hashem, who took over the Southern Front from Ali Karaki in September 2024, after the latter was killed alongside Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli strike.<\/p>\n

Hashem was a \u201csenior commander with over 40 years of experience and a central figure in the terror organization,\u201d the military says.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two additional Hizballah operatives<\/a> \u2013 Ali Habib Qassem Merhi Barakat and Adham Al-Zein \u2013 were reportedly killed in the same strike.<\/p>\n

In a separate strike on a convoy<\/a> of Hizballah vehicles<\/a> at least three<\/a> Hizballah operatives were killed, including Mohammad Baqer Baha\u2019a Al-Nabulsi<\/a>, who was mourned by the Iranian embassy<\/a> in Beirut. \u00a0Another strike on a vehicle south of Beirut<\/a> targeted Hizballah commander Hajj Ibrahim Zureik<\/a> and Mohammad Ali Khreiss<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Hizballah-allied Amal Movement announced<\/a> the deaths of several of its members<\/a> in southern Lebanon on March 31st, including Mustafa Ali Karim<\/a>, a commander and paramedic in its Al-Risala Scouts Association.<\/p>\n

In other words, had Lina Sinjab chosen to do so, she could have provided BBC audiences with the context to what she describes as \u201cintensified [\u2026] attacks on Lebanon\u201d. Instead, her entire report includes just one vague reference to the targets in the form of a quoted IDF statement, with readers learning nothing about those terror operatives.<\/p>\n
