{"id":53052,"date":"2026-04-05T20:12:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T20:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/53052\/"},"modified":"2026-04-05T20:12:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T20:12:15","slug":"lebanese-victim-describes-45-minute-israeli-attack-in-countrys-south-where-christian-villages-are-under-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/53052\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanese victim describes 45-minute Israeli attack in country&#8217;s south, where Christian villages are under threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bashir Nadaff lies in a hospital bed far from home, his skin pierced all over by shrapnel and debris from an Israeli attack on his village in southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The father was outside his home in the Christian town of D\u00e9bel with his wife and 14-year-old daughter in late March, when Israeli tanks rolled in and started firing, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bullets started raining down on us,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We hid in a small room downstairs as the gunfire continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We stayed like that for about 45 minutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Nadaff said he used his body to protect his wife and daughter as his house was repeatedly hit with tank and gunfire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When the shell hit, it struck the wall I was leaning against, not just the room. I stayed conscious, but I couldn&#8217;t see or hear. (ABC News: Ch\u00e9rine Yazbeck)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Nadaff&#8217;s home is inside the southern Lebanon zone, where Israel launched a ground invasion and intense aerial bombing campaign in early March, after the Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah fired on Israel in support of Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since then, hundreds of thousands of southern Lebanese residents have been ordered by Israel to leave their homes, or risk injury or death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But thousands of them are refusing to leave, saying they would rather stay put despite the risks \u2014 including residents of Christian villages that are not affiliated with Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As previous conflicts have shown, if they flee their homes, some of them may never return.<\/p>\n<p>Villages under siege<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Residents of D\u00e9bel, about six kilometres north of the Israel-Lebanon border, say the Israeli military is now blocking the only usable road in and out of their village, and conditions inside the town are deteriorating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We cannot leave, we cannot move, we are trapped,&#8221; said municipality president Akl Naddaf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We no longer have access to drinking water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We had an artesian well, but the area where it is located is now occupied by Israel. We cannot reach it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The situation is critical.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A view of a town nestled in a valley with many small buildings and greenery and surrounding mountains\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/62aeb6f14f7cc43e0615e4780d2de1b4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Christians in the town of Rmeich near the Israel-Lebanon border are refusing to leave their homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 (Reuters: Aziz Taher)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The IDF did not respond to the ABC&#8217;s questions about the attack in D\u00e9bel by deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It has previously said it does not target civilians and that its strikes target Hezbollah militants and their infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But in late March, Israel said it would totally seize and control southern Lebanon up to the Litani River \u2014 about 30 kilometres north of the border \u2014 to create a &#8220;buffer zone&#8221; against Hezbollah, equating to about 10 per cent of Lebanon&#8217;s territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Israel&#8217;s defence minister also said his military plans to demolish all homes in border villages, to create a new so-called &#8216;security buffer zone&#8217;, like the ones it created in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;All homes in Lebanese villages near the border will be destroyed \u2014 in accordance with the Rafah and Beit Hanoun model in Gaza,&#8221; Defence Minister Israel Katz said, referencing two cities that were effectively razed during the Israel-Gaza war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Just two kilometres from the Israel-Lebanon border is the Christian village of Rmeich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Speech therapist Teresa Touma, 24, is among those determined to remain in their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I stayed because leaving feels like giving up everything that defines me,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Yes, I&#8217;m afraid. But staying is also a way of holding on, holding on to who we are, to where we belong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are not just people passing through. We are rooted here. It&#8217;s our land. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Many villages in southern Lebanon suffered widespread destruction during the previous war between Israel and Hezbollah, which broke out in late 2023 shortly after the war in Gaza commenced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">By late 2024, more than 1 million Lebanese had been displaced, and some have still not returned home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The US helped broker a ceasefire in November that year, but Israeli troops remained in the country, and Lebanon&#8217;s army said Israeli air strikes continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The IDF said its strikes were on Hezbollah targets, but in October last year, the UN said more than 100 civilians had been killed during the ceasefire, including 16 children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We&#8217;re under bombardment&#8217;: Christians call for help<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Israel&#8217;s military has not stated whether Christian villages will be spared demolition or forced displacement during this war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But in recent days, the Lebanese Army, which had been providing safe passage for residents to get food and medical supplies from nearby villages, pulled out of the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Inside Rmeich, the parish priest Father Najib al-Amil issued a public plea for the state to step in and protect the village and its residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Please do not leave us,&#8221; he called on the army.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Either we all die and our village is lost, or we all live and our villages survive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;On the outskirts of the town \u2026 we&#8217;re under bombardment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And even if someone just went after their sheep or goats to get them from the field, [Israel will] bomb them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For that reason, we don&#8217;t dare go outside the town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"the priest wearing robe and white collar holding a phone to his ear standing among a crowd\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/d81bdb5224f9a2292b6fc64fd755e841.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Father Najib al-Amil called on the government and army to step in and protect the village and its residents. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the south, which has lived through Israeli invasions before, the latest war has sparked fears of another long-term occupation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Many of its older residents distinctly remember the Israeli occupation in 1982, which in some parts of southern Lebanon did not end until 2000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-26\/israel-lebanon-war-in-middle-east-displaced-flee-to-sidon\/106479570\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lebanon&#8217;s &#8216;existential war&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Southern Lebanon has a &#8220;very long history&#8221; of conflict with Israel, but many residents say this time feels different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Touma sits inside her lounge room and listens to the sounds of Israeli bombs nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She is fearful that one could soon hit her village and says she is putting her faith in God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And what scares us the most is how quickly everything can change,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In one moment, you are speaking, the next moment, everything could be gone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The future, honestly, it feels unclear, almost blurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But despite everything, there is a small part of us that refuses to stop hoping because without hope, it would be impossible to stay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A large cross and a flag of Lebanon erected on top of hill, underneath large letters read Rmeich\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/655e7f7152a9c7931cfd0366b4604ceb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rmeich is one of many Christian villages in Lebanon&#8217;s south, close to the Israeli border.
