Arrow 3 serves a unique purpose within Israel\u2019s layered air defence system, the interception of ballistic missiles. Both Iran and Yemen have fired ballistic missiles at Israel, and they reflect the most complex and advanced threat the country\u2019s air defences face.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The deal is expected to be signed shortly, allowing for a \u201csignificant increase\u201d in both production and stockpiling of the missiles. The press release adds that this is part of the ongoing preparations for Operation Roaring Lion. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to the director general of the Israeli MoD, Major General Amir Baram, the MoD has been on an emergency footing for the past 12 months as it worked to increase production rates across the country\u2019s air defence system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Baram is referring to the\u00a012-day\u00a0war between Israel, the US, and Iran in April 2025. Short and intense, the war\u00a0consumed 25% of US THAAD interceptors and an unknown quantity of Arrow missiles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Operation Roaring Lion will\u00a0likely provide\u00a0many lessons for forces around the globe. Firstly, it serves to re-emphasise the\u00a0immense risk that\u00a0US airpower\u00a0can pose to an adversary. Despite Iran\u2019s air defences and preparations for such an eventuality, it has suffered extensively under the US and Israeli airstrikes.\u00a0Perhaps more\u00a0importantly, however, is\u00a0Israel\u2019s approach to munitions production and stockpiling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
This\u00a0uplift in Arrow production\u00a0is at least the fourth announcement since\u00a0the operation began in February. The Israeli MoD has pre-emptively placed contracts with its domestic industry and\u00a0initiated\u00a0an airlift of\u00a0additional\u00a0munitions.\u00a0Its goal was to ensure that it could not only withstand Iran\u2019s retaliation but sustain a long strike campaign. The lesson here is perhaps that wars are rarely short or decisive, and preparation for every eventuality\u00a0breeds\u00a0flexibility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In a nutshell, for other\u00a0MoDs\u00a0such as Japan, South Korea, or Eastern Europe, that are facing adversaries with large long-range strike arsenals, there is plenty to take away from\u00a0the way that Israel has prepared for Operation Roaring Lion.\u00a0The stockpiling and increased production of Arrow are just one such example.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
