His father, Hafez al-Assad, ruled Syria from 1970-2000.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-494c9bd72e8cb5105428551b7c3bea94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roughly 4 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/syria-emergency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than 12 million people have been displaced internally.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-18b7dedff847b1f5fc554e47b662a6c5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, <a href=\"https:\/\/snhr.org\/blog\/2024\/11\/20\/on-world-childrens-day-snhrs-13th-annual-report-on-violations-against-children-in-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than 30,000 children have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the war<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-678e45cbc6b1b0d0797f28fd09981288@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the civil war began in 2011,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/09\/15\/middleeast\/syrian-conflict-how-can-it-be-stopped\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> there were four main factions of fighting groups<\/a> throughout the country: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/08\/18\/world\/kurdish-people-fast-facts\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kurdish<\/a> forces, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/08\/08\/world\/isis-fast-facts\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ISIS<\/a>, other opposition (such as Jaish al Fateh, an alliance between the Nusra Front and Ahrar-al-Sham) and the Assad regime.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c9ae95adb418315a439a9a2ed8a6bc9d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 2011 &#8211; Violence flares in Daraa after a group of teens and children are arrested for writing political graffiti. Dozens of people are killed when security forces crack down on demonstrations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-06a40e6775bc7f94e7c08ce6f8f3e251@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 24, 2011 &#8211; In response to continuing protests, the Syrian government announces several plans to appease citizens. State employees will receive an immediate salary increase. The government also plans to study lifting Syria\u2019s long standing emergency law and the licensing of new political parties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-7b3197893ee526dd9b5952e1bfd3f03b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 30, 2011 &#8211; Assad addresses the nation in a 45-minute televised speech. He acknowledges that the government has not met the people\u2019s needs, but he does not offer any concrete changes. The state of emergency remains in effect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-14584d04fe9af37f68406f969470ce7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            April 21, 2011 &#8211; Assad lifts the country\u2019s 48-year-old state of emergency.
