Kurds do not have an official homeland or country. Most reside within countries in the Middle East including northern Iraq, eastern Turkey, western Iran and small portions of northern Syria and Armenia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-77d1b0873518f6cd80fa5840c4e3c514@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Population: Estimates range between 25 million and 45 million worldwide. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/05\/middleeast\/kurds-iran-kurdistan-explainer-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kurds make up about 10% of the population in Syria, 20% of the population of Turkey, 15-20% of the population of Iraq and 8-17% of Iran\u2019s population. <\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-4491a20dd32a6fb76394c7b6273d1cc5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Religion: Most are Sunni Muslims; some practice Sufism, a type of mystic Islam.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-3d652d845196cd4e6408faffe47e8b71@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kurds have never achieved nation-state status, making Kurdistan a non-governmental region and one of the largest stateless nations in the world.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c351a1abe38012957703c648a747369d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Portions of the region are recognized by two countries: Iran, where the province of Kordestan lies; and northern Iraq, site of the autonomous region known as Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) or Iraqi Kurdistan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-364e45d640f2a150c9080ad819e46ba4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kurds were mostly nomadic until the end of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/07\/09\/world\/world-war-i-fast-facts\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World War I<\/a> and the breakup of the Ottoman Empire.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-3b7182c15a812a74a433918b616d62da@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/video\/data\/2.0\/video\/world\/2014\/08\/15\/natpkg-who-are-the-peshmerga.cnn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Peshmerga is a more than 100,000-strong national military force which protects Iraqi Kurdistan<\/a>, and includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/03\/12\/world\/cnnphotos-female-peshmerga-fighters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">female fighters<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-7d3fa70bb2d4732a94b42844952f0544@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            October 30, 1918 &#8211; (TURKEY) The Armistice of Mudros marks the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-55ed10710909d1afda446a493a6a23b2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            November 3, 1918 &#8211; (IRAQ) With the discovery of oil in the Kurdish province of Mosul, British forces occupy the region.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-d457b8dd9249560cb74060b1594aa501@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            August 10, 1920 &#8211; (TURKEY) The Treaty of S\u00e8vres outlines the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, with Turkey renouncing rights over certain areas in Asia and North Africa. It calls for the recognition of new independent states, including an autonomous Kurdistan. It is never ratified.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-fad22996b8c4e28a87585c66417590bf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            July 24, 1923 &#8211; (TURKEY) The Allies and the former Ottoman Empire sign and ratify the Treaty of Lausanne, which recognizes Turkey as an independent nation. In the final treaty marking the conclusion of World War I, the Allies drop demands for an autonomous Turkish Kurdistan. The Kurdish region is eventually divided among several countries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-3f49697d136dda6b952c464ebe58bb99@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            1923 &#8211; (IRAQ) Former Kurdish Governor Sheikh Mahmud Barzinji stages an uprising against British rule, declaring a Kurdish kingdom in Sulaimaniya in northern Iraq.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9653760f24d57adc229840984c1113ab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            1924 &#8211; (IRAQ) British Forces retake Sulaimaniya.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9c574c4c3306ad0c2d0af8fcbd00f455@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            1943-1945 &#8211; (IRAQ\/IRAN) Mustafa Barzani leads an uprising, gaining control of areas of Erbil and Badinan. When the uprising is defeated, Barzani and his forces retreat to Kurdish areas in Iran and align with nationalist fighters under the leadership of Qazi Muhammad.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f0d4844f86d7fc36cba79dc983e6795a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            January 1946 &#8211; (IRAN) The Kurdish Republic of Mah\u0101b\u0101d is established as a Kurdish state, with backing from the Soviet Union. The short-lived country encompasses the city of Mah\u0101b\u0101d in Iran, which is largely Kurdish and near the Iraq border. However, Soviets withdraw the same year and the Republic of Mah\u0101b\u0101d collapses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c8898db3b2a9a83251313b10336a2027@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            August 16, 1946 &#8211; (IRAQ) The Kurdish Democratic Party of Iraq (KDP) is established.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-60cde49120c00b96afb7a813ba547513@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            1957 &#8211; (SYRIA) 250 Kurdish children die in an arson attack on a cinema. Within two weeks, the Iraqi government dissolves the Kurdish Democratic Party.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-26e22f698f97cb03d8ec92422c329029@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 1970 &#8211; (IRAQ) A peace agreement between Iraqi government and Kurds grants the Kurds autonomy. Kurdish is recognized as an official language, and an amendment to the constitution states: \u201cthe Iraqi people is made up of two nationalities: the Arab nationality and the Kurdish nationality.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-b3965714edac476c1cbea411b575ae6f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            March 6, 1975 &#8211; (ALGERIA) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/10\/17\/world\/meast\/saddam-hussein-fast-facts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iraqi President Saddam Hussein<\/a> and Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi of Iran sign a treaty. Iraq gives up claims to the Shatt-al-Arab waterway, while Iran agrees to end its support of the independence seeking Kurds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-1130cb674f3a409b2b5ba766b7fe9143@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            June 1975 &#8211; (IRAQ) Former <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/01\/04\/world\/meast\/jalal-talabani---fast-facts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KDP Leader Jalal Talabani<\/a>, establishes the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Into the 1980s, Kurds are forcibly removed from the Iranian border as Kurds are suspected of aiding Iranian forces during the Iran-Iraq War.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-c5dc6ed091f922f07b4d99819ca47649@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            1979 &#8211; (IRAQ) Mustafa Barzani dies in Washington, DC. After allied support to the Kurds is denied, Iraq crushes the uprising.
