The group was arrested through three coordinated<br \/>\noperations before being referred to the judiciary for legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shafaq.com\/en\/Security\/3-year-drug-crackdown-Iraq-busts-230-networks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Read more: 3-year drug crackdown: Iraq busts 230 networks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kirkuk Police dismantled a human trafficking ring accused of<br \/>\nluring and abducting underage girls and boys, then transferring them to the<br \/>\nKurdistan Region in exchange for money.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Shafaq News, Police Chief Fattah Mahmoud<br \/>\nAl-Khafaji noted that suspicions arose after a checkpoint under Kirkuk police<br \/>\ncommand intercepted a man traveling with four children \u2014two girls and two boys.<br \/>\nA review of identification documents showed no family ties between the man and<br \/>\nthe children, prompting further investigation. Al-Khafaji further revealed that<br \/>\nthe suspect admitted during questioning to involvement in several networks<br \/>\nengaged in luring and abducting minors, as well as selling them for financial<br \/>\ngain.<\/p>\n<p>In its 2025 report, the International Organization for<br \/>\nMigration (IOM) estimated that 221,000 people in Iraq are affected by what it<br \/>\ndescribes as \u201cmodern slavery,\u201d with women, children, minorities and displaced<br \/>\nfamilies among the most vulnerable. The United Nations Office on Drugs and<br \/>\nCrime (UNODC) reports that adult women account for more than half of all<br \/>\nvictims, while girls represent nearly one-fifth.
