\u201cThe bad news is that we have not reached an agreement,\u201d US Vice-President JD Vance said on Sunday after talks with Iranian negotiators lasting a marathon 21 hours.<\/p>\n

He said he needs a commitment that Iran would not seek to develop a nuclear weapon<\/a>. \u201cThe simple question is, do we see a fundamental commitment of will for the Iranians not to develop a nuclear weapon, not just now, not just two years from now, but for the long term? We haven\u2019t seen that yet. We hope that we will.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vice president said that they were in \u201cconstant communication\u201d with President Trump throughout the 21 hours of peace talks. Vance told reporters that the president urged him to have \u201cgood faith\u201d and \u201cmake your best effort to get a deal.\u00a0\u00a0We did that, and unfortunately, we weren\u2019t able to make any headway.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Vance has since left Islamabad for Washington.<\/p>\n

Trump typically, declared it a win. \u201cRegardless of what happens, we win. We totally defeated that country. And so let\u2019s see what happens. Maybe they make a deal. Maybe they don\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cWhether we make a deal or not makes no difference to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the two countries had \u201creached an understanding on a number of issues\u201d and there were \u201cdifferences of opinion on two to three important\u201d matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese negotiations were held after 40 days of imposed war, and were held in an atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion. It is natural that we should not have expected from the beginning to reach an agreement within one meeting,\u201d he said. \u201cNo one expected that either.\u201d<\/p>\n

Does that suggest more meetings have been agreed upon? Iran currently has no plans to hold another round of negotiations with the United States,<\/a> a source close to the Iranian negotiating team told IRGC-affiliated Fars News.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Americans needed talks only to restore their lost international image and refused to lower expectations despite battlefield defeats against Iran,\u201d media reports quoted the source as saying. He also added that Iran\u2019s negotiating team \u201cdefended the achievements of the field\u201d during the talks.<\/p>\n

The Iranian foreign ministry had earlier accused the US of making \u201cexcessive demands\u201d and \u201cunlawful requests\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Iran\u2019s semi-official Tasnim news agency said talks had apparently floundered over the Strait of Hormuz, indicating \u201cserious disagreement\u201d over its status.<\/p>\n
