Younger Republicans are much less likely to support the war.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/89548465007-trump-lashes-out-over-strait.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trump accuses Iran of &#8216;poor job&#8217; in handling of Strait of Hormuz<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump accuses Iran of limiting Strait of Hormuz oil traffic as Tehran ties ceasefire terms to protection of Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>In casting his ballot for President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" data-autotag=\"26f031d1-9924-4f10-b4e6-019d076113d5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>, Alabama resident Gray Holland said a big factor was his belief that Trump would avoid another war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really ran on the concept of no wars,\u201d Holland said.<\/p>\n<p>Now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/04\/03\/iran-war-donald-trump-gas-prices-live-updates--live\/89445702007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/04\/03\/iran-war-donald-trump-gas-prices-live-updates--live\/89445702007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. is at war with Iran<\/a> and Holland, a 25-year-old Republican from Birmingham who works in sales for a flooring manufacturer said he\u2019s not happy with the president\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d rather not be involved in another foreign war with Iran or whoever else it may be in the Middle East at the time,\u201d Holland said. \u201cI just think we need to stay out of it and worry about ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/polls-show-consistent-majorities-opposing-military-action-iran-month-w-rcna266229\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/polls-show-consistent-majorities-opposing-military-action-iran-month-w-rcna266229\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Polls show<\/a> most Americans disapprove of the Iran war, and while older Republicans have largely stood behind Trump, younger ones are much more likely than their elders to oppose it.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/03\/PP_2026.3.25_iran_report.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/03\/PP_2026.3.25_iran_report.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a> released last month found that less than half \u2013 49% &#8211; of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents age 18 to 29 approve of Trump\u2019s handling of Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, 69% of Republicans and those who lean Republican approve of how Trump is handling the Iran conflict, with support increasing by age, according to the Pew survey. Among Republicans and Republican leaners 65 and older, 84% approve of Trump&#8217;s record on Iran, while 79% approve in the 50 to 64 age group and 60% among those 30 to 49.<\/p>\n<p>Among all Americans, the poll found that just 37% support Trump&#8217;s approach to Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Facing deep skepticism about the war at home, Trump has pushed to end the conflict,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/04\/07\/iran-war-us-trump-hormuz-deadline-updates--live\/89492185007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/04\/07\/iran-war-us-trump-hormuz-deadline-updates--live\/89492185007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> announcing a ceasefire<\/a> April 7 and negotiations in Pakistan to find a permanent settlement. The ceasefire appears to be on shaky ground, though, as both sides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/04\/10\/iran-war-trump-ceasefire-updates--live\/89543746007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2026\/04\/10\/iran-war-trump-ceasefire-updates--live\/89543746007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accuse the other <\/a>of not abiding by the agreement. The prospect of more fighting remains, an outcome that could further divide Republicans heading into the November midterm election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiminished\u201d opinion of Trump<\/p>\n<p>Trump made gains with young voters in his successful 2024 campaign,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2025\/06\/26\/voting-patterns-in-the-2024-election\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2025\/06\/26\/voting-patterns-in-the-2024-election\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> winning 39% of voters under 30<\/a> compared with 35% in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>But now some of his younger supporters are growing disillusioned by his decision to launch a war that they think violates his campaign promises. &#8220;I&#8217;m not going to start a war. I&#8217;m going to stop wars,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/remarks-accepting-election-the-47th-president-the-united-states-palm-beach-florida\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/remarks-accepting-election-the-47th-president-the-united-states-palm-beach-florida\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump said<\/a> on election night in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Trump campaigned as a staunch critic of previous U.S. wars in the Middle East and lately has been accused of betrayal by some who subscribed to his anti-interventionist, \u201cAmerica First\u201d pledges.<\/p>\n<p>Prominent Trump supporters such as podcaster Joe Rogan, whose large audience includes many younger men, have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/10\/joe-rogan-criticizes-donald-trump-iran-war\/89092341007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/10\/joe-rogan-criticizes-donald-trump-iran-war\/89092341007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">critical of the Iran war.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just seems so insane based on what he ran on,\u201d\u00a0said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheJoeRoganExperience\/videos\/discussing-trump-iran-israels-influence-and-growing-ww3-fears\/4227706724224983\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rogan, who endorsed Trump in 2024.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI mean, this is why a lot of people feel betrayed, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holland said Trump\u2019s campaign rhetoric about Middle East conflicts was \u201cat the forefront of one of my decisions to vote for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just thought we should stay out of anything over there at the time, and I thought he would do it, and he hasn\u2019t,\u201d Holland said. \u201cSo it\u2019s definitely diminished my opinion of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some young Republicans told USA TODAY they&#8217;re concerned about the cost-of-living and would rather see Trump focus on economic issues than Iran. Holland pointed to the cost of housing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so many other problems at home we need to focus on other than Iran,\u201d Holland said. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I have huge issues with it&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Nevada Republican Morgan Kern said her top concern is providing for her family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe most definitely need to protect the American people\u2026 but sending young men and women over to fight a war is not top in my list of priorities,\u201d said Kern, who works in insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Kern, 46, voted for Trump. She has personal reasons to be concerned about the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have huge issues with it just because I have two children in the military, I would rather them not have to go to war,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kern is not sure if the war was justified, she doesn\u2019t feel like she has enough information. But she questioned the threat Iran posed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m most definitely not for it until I feel that we are really threatened,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cI don\u2019t feel that we\u2019re super-threatened as of yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most Republicans support Trump on Iran<\/p>\n<p>Even as many younger Republicans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/01\/trump-iran-maga-backlash-tucker-mtg\/88935179007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/01\/trump-iran-maga-backlash-tucker-mtg\/88935179007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some prominent MAGA voices<\/a> fret about Iran, the GOP base is still largely behind Trump on the war.<\/p>\n<p>The demographic divide within the GOP on Iran is mirrored in the larger population. Just 19% of all U.S. adults age 18 to 34 say they approve of how Trump is handling Iran, compared with 41% of adults 45 and older, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/27966054-cnn-poll-conducted-by-ssrs-war-in-iran\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/27966054-cnn-poll-conducted-by-ssrs-war-in-iran\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> a CNN\/SSRS survey.<\/a> A survey <a href=\"https:\/\/d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net\/documents\/econTabReport_3wplfYX.pdf#page=4\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net\/documents\/econTabReport_3wplfYX.pdf#page=4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by The Economist\/YouGov<\/a> found that only 13% of adults age 18 to 29 support the war.<\/p>\n<p>Dartmouth professor Jeff Friedman noted that younger voters grew up with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, conflicts that the public became disenchanted with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that really cast a pall over public attitudes towards military force,\u201d said Friedman, who studies the politics around foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>Older voters saw the U.S. \u201cwin the Cold War and decisively win the 1991 Gulf War,\u201d Friedman added. Older Republicans also came of age at a time when the GOP was \u201cmore committed to a robust military presence abroad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Vernon Sommers, 62, said so far the \u201cpositive outweighs the negative\u201d for him when it comes to Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my perspective it seems like it had to be done because they weren&#8217;t relenting on their desire to make a nuclear weapon,\u201d added Sommers, a retired former masonry company owner in Sarasota, Florida, who voted for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota Republican Jessica Stawarski, 43, voted for Trump three times and continues to support him. She trusts the administration on the Iran war, although she has concerns about a protracted conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know he ran on no forever wars and no stupid wars, so I feel like there must be a good reason for it,\u201d said Stawarski, a Waite Park resident who works for a salvage yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it goes longer&#8230; then I\u2019ll be a little more hesitant to support it but as of right now I do support the administration,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Sommers acknowledged that if the war drags on it could hurt the GOP, pointing to spiking gas prices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter if it&#8217;s the Democrats or the Republicans in office, if you have things going wrong with the economy that seems to be one of the biggest drivers of people going to the polls and wanting change,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Any erosion in Trump\u2019s GOP support could add to the party\u2019s already considerable challenges heading into the midterm election. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/25\/emily-gregory-election-results-meaning-for-midterms-2026\/89312758007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/25\/emily-gregory-election-results-meaning-for-midterms-2026\/89312758007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrats won<\/a> a series of electoral victories in 2025 and 2026 that have raised questions about whether a blue wave is building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in this country where the electoral margins are razor thin\u2026 if this is the kind of thing that swings public opinion for the Republican Party by half a percentage point that can be decisive,\u201d Friedman said.<\/p>\n<p>Holland said the Iran conflict is on his mind ahead of the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely makes me less excited to vote,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Even within Trump\u2019s GOP base, cracks are showing when it comes to the Iran conflict.
