PARIS, April 13 (Reuters) – A Paris court on Monday found cement maker \u200cHolcim’s Lafarge unit guilty of charges \u200cthat its Syrian subsidiary financed terrorism https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/french-cement-maker-lafarge-faces-trial-charges-financing-jihadists-syria-2025-11-04\/ and breached European \u200bsanctions to keep a plant operating in northern Syria during the country’s civil war.<\/p>\n
Eight former Lafarge employees, including executives, were also found guilty of \u200cfinancing terrorism.<\/p>\n
Judges determined \u2060that Lafarge in total paid 5.59 million euros ($6.53 million) to jihadist groups \u2060including Islamic State and the al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front, both designated as terrorists by the \u200bEU, between \u200b2013 and September 2014.<\/p>\n
The \u200bpresiding judge, Isabelle \u200cPrevost-Desprez, said the payments made by Lafarge helped strengthen jihadist groups that carried out deadly attacks in Syria and beyond.<\/p>\n
“It is clear to the court that the sole purpose of the \u200cfunding of a terrorist organisation \u200bwas to keep the Syrian \u200bplant running \u200bfor economic reasons. Payments to terrorist \u200centities enabled Lafarge to continue \u200bits operations,” \u200bPrevost-Desprez said.<\/p>\n
“These payments took the form of a genuine commercial partnership with the Islamic \u200bState,” she \u200cadded.<\/p>\n
There was no immediate reaction from Lafarge \u200bor Holcim.<\/p>\n
