Families and businesses across Britain are shouldering the burden of instability “they did not cause”, the Chancellor has declared, as the UK leads efforts to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rachel Reeves made the comments ahead of her trip to the International Monetary Fund\u2019s spring meetings in Washington DC.<\/p>\n

There, she is expected to advocate for coordinated global action to mitigate the economic fallout from the Iran conflict, which has already triggered a surge in energy prices. The Resolution Foundation think tank estimates the conflict could leave the average UK household \u00a3480 <\/a>worse off over the current financial year.<\/p>\n

The IMF is poised to release its world economic outlook later today, providing updated global growth and inflation forecasts. This comes as Donald Trump\u2019s blockade of Iranian ports took effect, with the US president threatening to “eliminate” Tehran\u2019s fast attack vessels if they approach American warships.<\/p>\n

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is expected to advocate for global action to mitigate the economic impact of Trump\u2019s war (PA Wire)<\/p>\n

Sir Keir Starmer will chair Cabinet on Tuesday morning, where the conflict and its fallout are likely to feature high on the agenda.<\/p>\n

He has refused to back the operation and was instead working with French President Emmanuel Macron to bring together an international coalition aimed at securing future freedom of navigation in the strait, a vital route for global oil and gas supplies from the Gulf.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister told MPs the summit of world leaders later this week would focus on diplomatic efforts to reach a \u201cnegotiated end to the conflict\u201d and the reopening of the critical waterway, which had become a \u201crunning sore\u201d to the world.<\/p>\n

Military planning would also be undertaken \u201cto provide assurance to shipping as soon as a stable environment can be established\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir said: \u201cI\u2019m very concerned about the impact that this war is having on people back in the United Kingdom who\u2019ve obviously played no part in the war, but I don\u2019t want them paying the price.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s my primary focus.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments were echoed by the Chancellor, who said: \u201cFamilies and businesses across Britain are bearing the cost of instability they did not cause. These are not costs I wanted, but they are costs we will have to respond to.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iran conflict must be a line in the sand on how we deal with global crisis and instability.<\/p>\n

David Lammy has met with US vice president JD Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio in Washington DC (Lucy North\/PA)<\/p>\n

\u201cI will go to America with a clear message: global leaders must take co-ordinated economic action and supercharge the path to energy security to protect ourselves in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Separately, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy met with US vice president JD Vance<\/a> and secretary of state Marco Rubio in Washington DC where they discussed the current crisis in the strait.<\/p>\n

Amid a fragile ceasefire, Mr Lammy is understood to have highlighted the role the UK is playing in the international effort to ensure shipping can pass freely through the maritime pinchpoint.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, defending his actions, Mr Trump said: \u201cWe can\u2019t let a country blackmail or extort the world because that\u2019s what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he insisted Iran wants to strike an agreement but did not give further details.<\/p>\n

Speaking at an impromptu news conference at the White House later on Monday, the president said: \u201cWe\u2019ve been called this morning by the right people, the appropriate people, and they want to work a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vice president JD Vance told Fox News negotiations in Pakistan \u201cdid make some progress\u201d on Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n
