{"id":66806,"date":"2026-04-14T13:04:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T13:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/66806\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T13:04:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T13:04:05","slug":"president-trump-riffs-about-naming-the-gulf-of-america-after-himself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/66806\/","title":{"rendered":"President Trump riffs about naming the &#8216;Gulf of America&#8217; after himself"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/12\/us-news\/trump-announces-blockade-of-strait-of-hormuz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">President Trump<\/a> riffed that he considered naming the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/03\/us-news\/trump-says-us-could-easily-take-strait-of-hormuz-make-a-fortune-over-oil-exports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gulf of America<\/a> after himself but opted not too because it wouldn\u2019t \u201cplay too well\u201d \u2014 but then claimed he was only kidding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, it\u2019s called the Gulf of America, because of me. One of my little things that I did,\u201d Trump, 79, told Fox News\u2019 \u201cSunday Morning Futures.\u201d \u201cWhy is it the Gulf of Mexico when we have 93% of the shoreline?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI must tell you, I was thinking about calling it the \u2018Gulf of Trump\u2019 and I decided not to do it,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt was going to be called the Gulf of Trump, and then I said, \u2018You know, that\u2019s not going to play too well.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know I\u2019m kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US controls about 46% of the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico, <a href=\"https:\/\/edits.nationalmap.gov\/apps\/gaz-domestic\/public\/gaz-record\/558730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to data<\/a> from the US Geological Survey.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump claimed he was just joking about renaming the Gulf of America after himself.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Trump had taken executive action on his first day back in the White House last year to rename the \u201cGulf of Mexico\u201d as the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d The White House also <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/06\/us-news\/trump-boasts-of-big-win-over-ap-as-court-allows-wh-to-ban-access-after-gulf-of-america-spat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lashed out at the Associated Press<\/a> for failing to recognize the name change.<\/p>\n<p>The president recently claimed that the US was going to be shipping out \u201cmassive\u201d amounts of petroleum products to help countries dealing with the chaos in the Strait of Hormuz, where about a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil flows through on an annual basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMassive numbers of completely empty oil tankers, some of the largest anywhere in the World, are heading, right now, to the United States to load up with the best and \u2018sweetest\u2019 oil ([and] gas!) anywhere in the World,\u201d Trump announced on <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116385843841281126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Truth Social<\/a> early Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The president rebranded what was once the Gulf of Mexico last year. frank \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have more oil than the next two largest oil economies combined \u2013 and higher quality. We are waiting for you. Quick turnaround!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Trump announced a blockade of the critical oil chokepoint in response to Iran claiming to have lost track of the mines there and attempting to charge tolls for passage through the waterway. <\/p>\n<p>Trump previously mused about renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself or rechristening it the \u201cStrait of America,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/27\/us-news\/trump-considers-renaming-strait-of-hormuz-after-either-america-or-himself-once-he-evicts-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Post previously reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>President Trump argued that renaming it the Gulf of America was more appropriate because the US controls more of the shoreline. Taras Vykhopen \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Trump has publicly floated the possibility of naming things after himself, before eventually following through. <\/p>\n<p>Last August, for example,\u00a0the president <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kimrunner\/status\/1958939399225582023?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">remarked<\/a>\u00a0that \u201csome people refer to it as the Trump-Kennedy Center, but we\u2019re not prepared to do that quite yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By December, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/18\/us-news\/kennedy-center-officially-rebrands-as-trump-kennedy-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the rebrand was official<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>His administration also renamed the US Institute of Peace as the Donald J.
