Iraq \u201csucceeded in rallying international support\u201d within
\nUNESCO to condemn attacks on educational and cultural institutions and
\ncivilians, an Iraqi official said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Iraq\u2019s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Asaad Turki
\nSawari, noted that Iraq\u2019s cultural and education sectors presented the
\ninitiative during the 224th session of UNESCO\u2019s Executive Board, held in Paris
\non Monday, April 13, 2026, with the participation of member states and senior
\ndiplomatic delegations.<\/p>\n
The proposal received broad support from participating
\ncountries, which observed the moment of silence and expressed condemnation of
\nthe human and cultural losses.<\/p>\n
Military operations during the war between the US, Israel, and Iran have caused extensive damage to Iran\u2019s cultural and education sectors,
\nwith authorities reporting around 140<\/a> historical sites affected and losses
\nestimated at $110 million. Airstrikes have also resulted<\/a> in significant
\ncivilian casualties, including 230 students and teachers killed and 177
\nwounded, while 500 to 600 educational and cultural institutions have been
